Janesville GM Plant: President Obama Promised It Would Run Another Hundred Years
The Democrats were out, last night and today, fact checking Paul Ryan’s speech at the RNC convention. Turns out that even the Democratic fact checkers are liars or incompetents.
They “fact checked” the quote from Ryan’s speech which referred to the Janesville GM plant that Obama visited and promised he’d keep open. Their conclusion – Ryan lied. They claimed the plant closed under George Bush’s watch, a claim which has since been proven false.
Obama visited the Janesville plant in February, 2008 on a campaign stop. He promised to keep the plant open and save the jobs of the 2,000 employees. Janesville made small trucks and SUV’s.
“If our government is there to support you, and give you the assistance you need to re-tool and make this transition…this plant will be here for another hundred years,” he said.
In October, 2008, Obama said it again:
“As president, I will lead an effort to retool plants like the GM facility in Janesville so we can build the fuel-efficient cars of tomorrow and create good-paying jobs in Wisconsin and all across America.”
The plant was closed in 2009 on Obama’s watch in April, 2009 according to Free Beacon and June, 2009 according to some former employees. Either way, it was while Obama was president, not Bush.
The $50 billion bailout, which has not been paid back, has helped GM increase its manufacturing capacity. Unfortunately, as of August, 2009, within months of the Janesville plant closure, it’s been increased in China.
GM moved much of their manufacturing to Jilin Province in China, where they build small trucks and SUV’s. They’ve sold 88,000 of these vehicles since 2010.
