Rose Gottemoeller, Acting Under Secretary for Arms Control and International Security, is at it again. She recently spoke to the Finnish Institute for International Affairs, to brag about Obama’s process of eliminating so many of our nuclear weapons that we will have as few as France.
It has been over 3 years since President Obama made his now-famous speech in Prague, in which he stated that the United States would seek the peace and security of a world without nuclear weapons. That speech was not just a rhetorical gesture; the Prague Agenda is a step by step path to the elimination of nuclear weapons.
It doesn’t end there, Rose, a Biden-like genius, has an answer for all our problems once our armaments are gone. She calls it Sisu, a Finnish word for determination and will power.
She had dinner with her two tech-guru sons on how to handle nonproliferation and verification. Sounds encouraging (I’m being sarcastic.)
What is the answer they came up with, you ask? How can we handle the verification of arms control and nonproliferation treaties once we make ourselves irrelevant?
Social networking is one of the answers! Yes, Facebook and Twitter will be critical in checking on all those crazies who want to develop nuclear weapons while we destroy ours. Then there are iphones, ipads, and all those tablets that will help save us.
It was actually a conversation with my two tech-guru sons over the dinner table that helped to further develop my thoughts on the subject. We discussed the incorporation of open source technologies – including social networking – into the verification of arms control and nonproliferation treaties.
I don’t think we should ignore technology but we certainly should NOT be destroying our nuclear armaments while the rest of the world increases theirs, especially since many of them hate us.
She quotes a genius, cites a balloon contest that was solved with social networking, she talks of “recruiting its citizens and their iPhones to help prove that it is not stashing extra missiles in the woods,” she dreams of the power of tablets, ipads, and iphones, but all the while she misses the point – we can’t lead from a position of weakness.
If you have seen the movie, Defiance, which is a movie, a true story, of Jewish brothers in Nazi-occupied Eastern Europe. They escape into the Belarussian forests where they join Russian resistance fighters and try to build a village to protect themselves and 1,000 Jewish non-combatants.
I can’t remember the exact details but there is a scene in the movie where a young communist in the community comes upon Nazis and, instead of shooting them, he makes them promise to not tell where they are. Of course the Nazis promise not to tell, kind of like the Iranians say they aren’t building a nuclear bomb now.
Shortly after, the Nazis come and kill many including the communist’s good friend and the kindest man in the community, a Rabbi.
Rose Gottemoeller and Barack Obama are the young communists in the forest making our enemies promise not to kill us as we try tweet them to death.
