House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi
If Democrats were to take control of the House of Representatives after the November elections, Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi said her party would “amend the [U.S.] Constitution” on the “very first day” to overturn the Supreme Court’s “Citizens United” decision.
That’s the lead paragraph of a report at the Daily Caller.
It’s a promise she can’t possibly deliver. And any high school Civics class student could tell you that. But they don’t teach Civics in high school these days, so maybe Nancy Pelosi will get a pass for this outrageous statement.
For the record, the House of Representatives does not amend the U.S. Constitution. The process is long and drawn out by design, to make such changes extremely difficult and to avoid altering that document at each session of Congress. In the end, such amendments must be ratified by the States, which can take up to a year or more before the question is addressed at each state level.
What Pelosi is doing here is making a promise that’s simply impossible to deliver. But that doesn’t matter; more than half of the people listening to her will believe it as truth and agree 100%. When it doesn’t happen, they’ll blame those mean, nasty obstructionist Republicans.
The fact of the matter is that socialist Senator Bernie Sanders of Vermont has introduced a bill in the upper chamber that would – if passed and signed into law – amend the Constitution to redefine who can legally contribute to political campaigns. If he’s in a position to do so, Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid will fast-track that bill to the Senate floor for debate and that’s where it will either pass, be defeated or fail to receive enough votes to halt the debate (cloture). A so-called super majority would be required for cloture and it’s highly unlikely the Democrats could advance the measure to a vote. Especially if the Republicans gain seats in November’s elections.
The House of Representatives – where Nancy Pelosi now reigns as the Minority Leader – would never see the bill.
