Scott Compton, a high school teacher in Chapin, South Carolina, tore down the US flag in two separate incidents in two different classrooms and then began stomping on the flag each time.
He said the flag was just a piece of cloth, just a symbol, and didn’t mean anything. I think our veterans might feel very differently.

The flag is a symbol. I think this teacher drove the lesson home that it is just a piece of cloth. It is important to show respect for the flag out of our own free will but not be forced to show it respect. Many people can’t get past their emotionalism regarding patriotism and love of their country. Please make a distinction between love of country, patriotism and blind worship of a piece of cloth and don’t be such a patriotism cop.
I am a Vietnam veteran and I love the flag because I want to not because some flag cop is looking over my shoulder. And more people should stomp on the flag sometimes just to remind people it’s just a piece of cloth, a symbol. It is not my country.
