If your enemy is secure at all points, be prepared for him. If he is in superior strength, evade him. If your opponent is temperamental, seek to irritate him. Pretend to be weak, that he may grow arrogant. If he is taking his ease, give him no rest. If his forces are united, separate them. If sovereign and subject are in accord, put division between them. Attack him where he is unprepared, appear where you are not expected. ~ Sun Tzu
The following is an account of a 99% training day which amounted to an indoctrination on class warfare and entitlement. It mimics the President’s campaign rhetoric of demonizing the rich and attacking opponents as racists. Without a positive record to run on, Obama will employ a divide and conquer approach to re-election.
The account is from a Californian who attended an Occupy Training:
“I attended one of the thousands of Occupy Trainings held on April 14th .
Our trainers were Daniel and Karen who had recently gone through a 2 day training in Los Angeles. They were “condensing” their training into 3 1/2 hours.
The stated goal, to use Local Non Violent Direct Action to correct Social Injustice. They asked who we were, their answers: union members, teachers, Federal employees, military, vets, ex-patriots, Progressive Democrats, Regular Democrats and two very odd Republicans.
The first part of a video was played to setup the audience, stories of the disenfranchised and those struggling in the bad economy. Who were those in attendance when asked: union members, environmentalists, unemployed, students buried by their education loans and tales of how the corrupt banks have taken over their homes.
On the DVD they even spoke about the Martin-Zimmerman case. It was class warfare using the bad economy as a tool to incite people.
And a lot of finger pointing at the Citizens United Case as the downfall of our political system.
We broke out into groups of four. I was with two very old hippies and one very embittered out of work engineer wearing a, Must Try Bush for War Crimes T-Shirt. We were instructed to write our stories on a 99% sheet and share the details with our group. The old hippie who had graduated from UCLA had a copy of Get Up Stand Up in his backpack. He, like the others, were concerned about their children and grandchildren and what kind of America they would inherit.
Then the whole group reconvened. We had to shout out what we learned from each other under these categories:
Anti-war, Anti-Capitalist, Anti-Elitists, Workers, Ethical, Ministers, Minorities (all but one attendee was Caucasian), Parents
What Are We Struggling Against:
Corruption, Racists, Dictatorships, Police State, Fascism, Poverty, Environmental Pollution, Militarism, Medical Coverage, Greed, Debt, Cronyism, Keeping Social Security, Keeping Free Public Services, Keep the wealthy from taking from us.
What Can We Want:
Defend the future, keep our health care because it is a right, clean the environment, have public funding for elections, ban Lobbyists, Social Security is a right, have the right to know what we were eating, have only publicly funded media and broadcasting, animal rights, an honest media.
We watched more of the DVD. Occupy has reinvented itself, taken bits and pieces of the Tea Party and blending it with the Progressive Movement. They went over how the Founding Fathers from the beginning were slaveholders and their was inequality in our country from the start. The disenfranchised were, slaves, industrial workers, women and Non Violent Direct Action by well trained activism changed our country for the better: The Abolitionists were on the same level and part of the same movement for equality as the formation of the unions, the initiation of Social Security, Farm Workers United (the grape boycott).
The market crash of 1929 was caused solely by greedy bankers and industrialists. In the 1970’s we entered a perpetual state of non-declared wars solely to support the defense contractors. Reagan was evil and favored the pharmaceutical industry. Occupy was always non-violent, anti global economy because of American jobs being shipped overseas. They touted the “uprising” against Governor Walker when he tried to “tear down” collective bargaining for public unions. They were instrumental in stopping the Keystone Pipeline. Big Oil is evil.
After that part of the video we repeated over and over, “We are the 99%” all but me who had cloistered myself in a nearby bathroom. We were asked to talk to those seated around us and ask what choices should the 99% make. My seatmates felt we needed Obama to be re-elected so he could appoint better judges to the Supreme Court, meaning get rid of the conservative judges and repeal Citizens United.
At lunch I found out 60 groups were sponsoring our spring training, including MoveOn.org. Occupy Oxnard (6 people) are pressuring the Board of Supervisors to stop foreclosure sales in the county because it’s hard to read the notary stamp on some of the deeds so who really knows who owned that property. I am really not sure what she was getting at. Her group got the idea from California Occupy Homes, a goggle group.
Organizing for America is active in Camarillo pushing for Obama’s re-election. One woman was looking forward to the League of Women Voters event on May 8, 6:30 p.m., Camarillo Library Community Room. The Citizens United Supreme Court case will be addressed by UCLA Professor Adam Winkler, who is an author and entertaining speaker. The 2010 Citizens United Supreme Court decision led to creation of super PACs which can accept unlimited donations from corporations, labor unions and wealthy individuals and use the funds to pay for advertising and other campaign expenses, as long as they do not coordinate with candidates. Open to the public.
I left after lunch.
From the materials which can found on the 99% Spring Manual:
– If you have time before your training, take a look at these
*Take photos and upload them *to the 99% Spring tumblr 99% Spring.
– After your training, plan a Tax Day protest. The 99% movement is mobilizing to demand that the 1% pay their fair share in taxes on Tax Day, April 17. This is a great opportunity to take action following your training. Progressive groups are organizing hundreds of marches, rallies, and protests at big, tax-dodging corporations and in our communities to highlight the disparity in the tax code for the 99% compared to the 1%.
