Guess what happens when we turn terrorists over to liberal Manhattan judges and lawyers for trial. That’s right, they cop pleas as if they were common criminals and not even important ones at that.
An Al Qaeda operative, Ahmed Abassi, who planned to blow up a train in Canada and who hoped to establish a network of terrorists to commit acts of terror in the United States, copped a plea to a far lesser charge. His terrorist activities were ignored and he was allowed to plead guilty to lying on his green card application form thanks to the liberal defense lawyer and the liberal judge.
He should be in GITMO.
Last year he radicalized a Canadian man, Chiheb Esseghaier, and convinced him to blow up a train.
Chiheb Esseghaier was arrested early last year in Canada for attempting to blow up a Canadian bridge from Toronto while a train between NY and Canada was crossing over the bridge. He is linked to al Qaeda in Iran through Ahmed Abassi. The Canadian border service, the Royal Canadian Mounties and their intelligence services were responsible for the capture of the would-be attacker according to the Canadian Broadcast Agency.
The man was radicalized by Tunisian Ahmed Abassi who arrived in New York City in March and was arrested in April.
“As alleged, Ahmed Abassi had an evil purpose for seeking to remain in the United States – to commit acts of terror and develop a network of terrorists here and to use this country as a base to support the efforts of terrorists internationally,” U.S. Attorney Preet Bharara said in a release issued after the federal indictment against Abassi was unsealed on Thursday.
The head of the New York FBI office, George Venizelos, said: “Mr. Abassi came to the United States to pursue terrorist activity and support others in the same shameful pursuit. What Mr. Abassi didn’t know was that one of his associates, privy to the details of his plan, was an undercover FBI agent.”
Prosecutors said Abassi told an undercover FBI agent that Esseghaier’s plans were good but the time was not right.
“The defendant noted that he had suggested an alternative plot – contaminating the air or water with bacteria in order to kill up to 100,000 people – but that Esseghaier was dismissive of that plan,” the government said.
It said Abassi also proposed that they help Muslims fighting in Syria by sending money or weapons.
“He also stated that he wanted to remain in the United States and that if he was living in the United States he would be willing to carry out terrorist operations in the United States,” prosecutors wrote. “In reality, the defendant made clear that his true purpose for obtaining immigration documents that would allow him to remain in the United States was to engage in `projects’ relating to future terrorist activities, including recruitment.”
Prosecutors say that Abassi, in recorded conversations with Esseghaier and the undercover officer, discussed his desire to raise funds for terrorist organizations such as the Nusrah Front, or al-Qaida in Iraq. Abassi also named to the undercover officer people he knew who were like-minded and might be willing to engage in terrorism, according to the court papers.
The Canadian Public Safety Minister called the development a “significant arrest”. That’s as far as we got in bringing a terrorist to justice. The liberals took over from there.
Abassi admitted to a Manhattan Federal Court Judge Miriam Cedarbaum that he lied when he filled out a green card application. He said he was going to work in real estate [instead of terrorism].
Abassi’s lawyer Sabrina Shroff accused investigators of entrapment. He was lured into the US to meet his wife, she said. Apparently that’s a problem. Liberals are very good at drawing moral equivalence over things like this.
His guilty plea included no reference to terrorism. He won’t face more than six years in prison. He can spend his time radicalizing the criminals in the jail. After he’s freed, he will be deported to Tunisia where he can plot and commit acts of terror.
