In an effort to damage Israel’s economy, there is a movement to boycott Israeli goods known as the BDS or Boycott, Divestment, Sanctions) movement. It has very limited success so far. The movement which began last December will continue over the next year. The haters behind the movement are pushing ahead and one group is holding a conference to further their anti-Israel mission.
When Secretary Kerry threatened Israel for not looking to achieve peace at all costs with Palestine, a country not even at the peace talks, he said, You see,” he stated, “for Israel there’s an increasing de-legitimization campaign that has been building up. People are very sensitive to it. There is talk of boycotts and other kinds of things. Are we all going to be better with all of that?”
He of course was not advising them, he was threatening them – if you don’t fulfill a peace agreement, he was telling them. you will be isolated.
The deal that he wants would require Israel to go back to 1967 borders which would leave their borders indefensible. Palestine now lays claim to Jerusalem and they have also made it clear that they want the complete destruction of Israel.
To date, there has been no significant effect on the booming Israeli economy but it won’t help if US weaklings like Kerry give it credibility and use it as a club.
The boycotts are aimed at all companies operating in what Palestinians have ordained are now illegal settlements. SodaStream has a factory at Mishor Adumim on land that Arabs want back. More than 500 Palestinians happily work at SodaStream, as part of a 1300 mixed work force.
Model and actress Scarlett Johansson quit her role as ambassador for the humanitarian charity Oxfam over the boycott of Israel. She was criticized for starring in an ad campaign for SodaStream, a fizzy drink company. She said she was ending her relationship with Oxfam over “a fundamental different of opinion.” in regards to the “boycott, divestment, and sanctions movement.”
Scarlett Johansson ad for SodaStream
Johansson said she is a “supporter of economic cooperation and social interaction between a democratic Israel and Palestine”. Oxfam was under pressure to drop Johansson so she left. Scarlett Johansson has more character than Secretary Kerry.
Groups behind BDS include communists and communist lawyers such as the communist front group – the National Lawyers Guild. Palestinian groups back it. Another group in support is the 5,000 member American Studies Association at NYU. Under the leadership of their new president Lisa Duggan, they are going to hold a two-day conference beginning February 28th which is no less than an effort to drive up the anti-Israel fervor.
Another academic institution that joined the boycott is the Association for Asian American Studies.
The anti-Israel activists hope to gain a strong foothold in universities in Europe and the United States to drive up the hate towards Israel. They even want to bar Israeli professors from conferences and from journal publication simply because of their ethnicity. So far 200 universities have condemned the BDS movement.
That takes us to the two-day conference sponsored by the American Studies Association at NYU and their new president Lisa Duggan.
Agemeiner broke the news about the conference which is being spread by word-of-mouth in the hopes of avoiding the press. The Feb. 28-March 1 event, titled “Circuits of Influence: U.S., Israel, and Palestine,” is billed as a follow-up to the wave of interest in their boycott.
The flyer below says the conference addresses the “convergence between international justice movements and emerging scholarly directions within the increasingly transnational field of American Studies.”
Duggan teaches at NYU, of all things, social and cultural analysis. He had a Facebook post up, since removed, that calls the event “kick ass” with anti-Israel speakers such as Students for Justice in Palestine and Jewish Voice for Peace. Tickets can be obtained at the event registration page
Duggan wrote on Facebook, “PLEASE DO NOT post or circulate the flyer. We are trying to avoid press, protestors and public attention. Feel free to share it with friends, colleagues and grad students though.”
Can you imagine if someone had an anti-black conference or an anti-Hispanic or anti-LGBT conference? What would happen then? Why are Jews fair game and why are there any Jews supporting this?
