Photo of Prince Andrew, the Duke of York, a dangerous intruder?
The 53-year old second son of Queen Elizabeth was mistaken for an intruder a week after a real intruder was found on the grounds of Buckingham Palace.
The Prince was enjoying a stroll in the gardens when two armed guards demanded he identify himself. He apparently lost his temper at the time.
It is not known why they weren’t aware of his presence in the palace. Reports that the guards drew their guns or ordered him onto the ground were untrue according to the BBC.
A palace insider reporting to The World newspaper gave a different account:
“When he got to a far corner away from the Palace, he was suddenly pounced upon by an officer, and another was not far behind.
“They shouted all the usual, put your hands up and get on the ground, and both pointed their guns straight at him.
When is Scotland Yard going to nab this suspicious-looking lady? I hear she has been wandering the grounds as well!
After the Scotland Yard apology, the duke said: “The police have a difficult job to do balancing security for the Royal Family and deterring intruders, and sometimes they get it wrong.
“I am grateful for their apology and look forward to a safe walk in the garden in the future.”
Good sport that Prince!
