It’s been 70 years since Auschwitz concentration camp in Poland was liberated. Three hundred survivors returned to the camp to mark the anniversary on January 27th.

Auschwitz survivors have urged the world not to allow a repeat of the crimes of the Holocaust.

“We survivors do not want our past to be our children’s future,” Roman Kent, born in 1929, told a memorial gathering at the death camp’s site in Poland.

Children in Auschwitz

More than one million people, mostly Jews were slaughtered there between 1940 and 1945.

One man spoke of the SS coming in the middle of the night and taking his family still in bed clothes to a brewery. They separated people to the left and right. He was grabbed from the line as he clung to his mother and brother because he had experience as an electrician’s helper. The people who went to the left were sent to Auschwitze to be gassed. He – Jack Mandelbaum – never saw his family again.

Another woman was sent into the gas chamber and came out alive. Someone asked her if she knew what just happened. She didn’t. They lied to her and she didn’t know she was entering a gas chamber to be killed. She didn’t know why or how she survived.

Every year, there are fewer and fewer survivors to remind us of what happened there. We have a world that is once again unfairly persecuting Jews. Vile incidents of hate and bigotry are taking place throughout Europe, even in Germany of all places.

There are the deniers of the Holocaust who are listened to more-and-more.

At the time, people were in denial. Who could believe such a thing could happen in modern society?

We are in denial once again.

Jewish children in Europe are fearful and one day the Jews will be gone from Europe. There are thousands of applications for residency in Israel and the United States. Seven thousand left last year alone.

Meanwhile, Muslim organizations say they’re worried about backlash on them. They worried about it after 9-11 also. No one in their right mind wants harm to come to Muslims because they are Muslims but why are so few speaking for Jews. Most bias crimes are against Jews, not Muslims.
