Bishops Issue Call To Action To Defend Religious Liberty

Forcing religious institutions to provide free contraceptives, abortifacients, and surgical sterilizations to every employee for free is not only about freedom of religion, it is about freedom.

Many people do not want to pay for abortifacients and sterilizations. Many people do not want to pay for everyone’s every medical need. Why is it the government’s right to tell us we must if it is against our principles?

Once the government is in control, choice is removed and all services become the province of the government. The government will decide what services we can or cannot have. Do people really want the IRS making their healthcare choices?

The HHS mandate is about the government compelling each of us to pay for whatever the government decides we will pay for.

If the government can take your healthcare choices away, what can’t they take away?

The federal government can do most anything it wants –

Remember when Justice Kagan refused to say the government doesn’t have the right to tell us what to eat?

If the government can decide your healthcare choices, tell you what to eat, and decide when you have too much money, what is left of individual liberty? This HHS mandate seeks to eliminate choice, not support women.

This HHS mandate battle should be everyone’s battle.

The United States Conference of Catholic Bishops is calling for A Fortnight for Freedom to take place from June 21 – July 4. Bishops throughout the country are calling for special events to highlight the importance of defending the first amendment. As information comes in, I will post it.

The government wants religion out of the charity business because they are Progressives and want complete secularization. If these services were suddenly dumped on the government, how well do you think the government would handle it?

Obama plans to relegate freedom of religion to the whims of government. This mandate affects many religions and one has to wonder – what will be next?

This battle could hurt or help Obama in his re-election campaign and he is obviously gambling on it helping. The left will use anything and everything they can to make it about the Catholic religion and women’s rights. Expect the ACLU to join in the battle as strong advocates against religion, particularly the Christian religion though this will also impact the Muslim and Jewish religions.

The target of the moment is the Catholic Church because of their larger-than-life presence in charities and educational institutions. They are also vulnerable to the divisive tactics that Obama is fond of.

The Catholic Church views on homosexuality are unpopular and the church has abandoned adoption and foster services in states that required them to provide same-sex couples with babies. This will be used as a straw man to make it about the Catholic religion and their views on specific issues.

Recent state court rulings have gone against churches on the grounds that the establishment clause requires the government to keep religion separate and non-preferential. The Supreme Court of the United States has chosen not to hear these cases. This clause would presumably allow the government to withdraw funding from all religious institutions if they do not adhere to the government mandates, no matter how unreasonable those mandates are.

This is not a battle the government needs to take on but it is one they want to take on. They want government to be our religion. They are totalitarians.

Obama declaring us a secular nation from a pulpit –

This is from the United States Catholic Bishops –

USCCB:…The U.S. bishops have issued a call to action to defend religious liberty and urged laity to work to protect the First Freedom of the Bill of Rights. They outlined their position in “Our First, Most Cherished Liberty.” The document was developed by the Ad Hoc Committee on Religious Liberty of the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB), approved for publication by the USCCB Administrative Committee March 13, and published in English and Spanish April 12.

The document can be found at http://www.usccb.org/issues-and-action/religious-liberty/our-first-most-cherished-liberty.cfm.

“We have been staunch defenders of religious liberty in the past. We have a solemn duty to discharge that duty today,” the bishops said in the document, “… for religious liberty is under attack, both at home and abroad.”…Read more…
