Brian Banks was 16 years old when he was accused by Wanette Gibson of kidnapping and rape in 2002. At the time of the charge, Brian Banks was a rising football star at Long Beach Poly High School.
He was faced with a choice – risk a 41 year sentence at trial or cop a plea to a 5 year jail sentence with an additional 5 years of monitoring with an ankle bracelet. He took the deal. He was forced to register as a sex offender after his release from jail.
I can’t know what it is like to be locked away but it has to be horrible, especially if you are innocent.
Wanette Gibson won a $1.5 million dollar lawsuit from the school at the time of the rape. Recently, feeling guilty about Bank’s lost career, she friended him on Facebook to say she was sorry. She agreed to meet with him and he taped the conversation.
She is on tape admitting that she lied. She would not say it in court because she would have to give the money back but apparently what she said on tape was enough to free Brian Banks of the charge.
Brian Banks hopes to continue with his football aspirations. He has not been able to get a job since his release and has had to live with relatives and friends.
Wanette gets to keep the money and she will not be charged.
Women who falsely accuse men of sex crimes diminish all women and should not be part of a protected class. Maybe she should have to suffer what he suffered or, in the least, give him the money.
