We have a CIA Director who is destined to make serious blunders at a time when we need the best.
CIA Director John Brennan sees radical Islamic terrorists as criminals and thugs. In his arrogance, he mocks conservatives who question the administration’s refusal to call radical Islamists what they are.
In a speech Friday, Brennan said, “Quite frankly, I’m amused about the debate that goes on about, you know, unless you call it by what it is, you don’t know what you’re fighting,” Brennan said. “I think we have to be very careful also in the characterization because the words that we use can have resonance.”
He’s wrong. Distorting the language distorts meaning.
Brennan is the same man who in 1998 said we should not strike Osama bin Laden.
In 2010, shortly before he became CIA Director, Brennan gave a speech at the Center for Strategic and International Studies in which he described violent radical Islamists as victims. He said their attacks should not be tied to religion.
Jihad is a “legitimate tenet of Islam” and a holy struggle and terrorism is a “tactic, a “state of mind”, Brennan said.
“Nor do we describe our enemy as ‘jihadists’ or ‘Islamists’ because jihad is a holy struggle, a legitimate tenet of Islam, meaning to purify oneself or one’s community, and there is nothing holy or legitimate or Islamic about murdering innocent men, women and children,” Brennan said.
He has continued to say that ever since.
On Friday, he told a gathering at the Center for Foreign Relations in New York City that we shouldn’t use the terms “Islam” or “Muslim”. Radical Islamists are not religious but rather “psychopathic criminals” and “thugs”.
In a speech commemorating the anniversary of the Osama bin Laden raid, John Brennan, Mr. Obama’s top counterterrorism adviser at the time, predicted the imminent demise of al Qaeda.
When he said it, he had to know the intel that was obtained during the bin Laden raid told a different story. There is a line crossed when secrets are kept because they are classified and when they are kept for propaganda purposes.
When bin Laden’s compound was raided, the team collected as much intelligence as possible. The haul included 10 hard drives, nearly 100 thumb drives and a dozen cellphones. There were DVDs, audio and video tapes, data cards, reams of handwritten materials, newspapers and magazines.
The White House cherry picked 17 documents and presented them to the terror center at West Point where they came to the conclusion that bin Laden was isolated and powerless, leading a crumbling terror network.
Garbage in, garbage out.
In a recent article for the Wall Street Journal by Stephen Hayes and Thomas Joscelyn, those with access at DIA, including Gen. Michael Flynn, knew the opposite was true. “By that time, they probably had grown by about—I’d say close to doubling by that time. And we knew that,” Flynn said.
Al Qaeda also had a strong presence in Afghanistan near the Pakistan border according to the recovered papers.
The documents showed cooperation between al Qaeda and Iran but if that leaked out it might hurt Obama’s chances of a nuclear deal.
DIA informed the president of these findings and he responded by cutting off access to the documents.
President Obama used the misinformation to fire up his campaign and advance his re-election chances – Osama is dead, GM is alive.
John Brennan now wants us to believe that ISIS aren’t radical Islamists. They’re psychopathic criminals and thugs.
This is our leadership at the CIA.
The U.S. military is shedding so many troops and weapons it is only “marginally able” to defend the nation and cannot fight wars on two fronts, according to the Quadrennial Defense Review by The Heritage Foundation.
It won’t be easy coming back from this failure in intelligence and we have two more years of it.
