Update: 10/19/14: This opera is opening today. It is a blatant attempt to use the murder of a handicapped Jewish man on vacation to further the cause of Palestinians and to offer sympathy to the terrorists. The opera tells the story of the murder of a handicapped Jewish tourist from the “sympathetic” viewpoint of the terrorists.
Original Story: June 22, 2014: In what many see as a propagandized use of operatic talent, apologists for terrorist violence against Israelis appear to have taken the death of an innocent tourist to further an anti-Israel message in the opera The Death of Klinghoffer. It seems heavily weighted to draw sympathy for the Palestinian terrorists.
In 1985, a disabled Jewish American, Leon Klinghoffer, an innocent appliance manufacturer, who was vacationing with his wife aboard the Achille Lauro cruise ship, was shot in the chest and forehead by Palestinian hijackers while in his wheelchair because he was a Jew. They then threw him overboard. His body was later recovered and a widely-attended funeral was held in the States.
His wife died of colon cancer only four months later. The Klinghoffer daughters took proceeds from a financial settlement with the PLO to form a foundation in their parents’ name to combat terrorism through educational, political and legal means.

This opera uses this vile terrorist attack to excuse Palestinian terrorists and to bring understanding to their supposedly understandable motives.
There is something despicable about exploiting the murder of an innocent, handicapped tourist to further the cause of his killers.
The 17-minute opening has Palestinians railing against Jews with grievances and hatreds. It’s followed by a chorus of Jewish singers but many say it leans anti-Semitic.
It premiered in 1991 and is about to make its reappearance at the MET this October to a great deal of controversy. The simulcast to be shown in theaters around the country has been canceled because of opposition by Jewish groups.
In 1991, the Klinghoffer family saw the production and afterwards released this statement:”We are outraged at the exploitation of our parents and the coldblooded murder of our father as the centerpiece of a production that appears to us to be anti-Semitic.”
