Delbert ‘Shorty’ Benton Contributed to His Own Death

Am I over reacting by getting so angry about the comments of this Police Chief?

“The motive for this attack was robbery,” Spokane Police Chief Frank Straub said, adding that the victim’s wallet was found discarded near the crime scene.

“These are two young men who just spun out of control.”

“Our information is that the individual fought back and that may have made this a worse situation,” Police Chief Straub said when asked about the viciousness of the beating.

Delbert-Belton-400x300Photo of Delbert ‘Shorty’ Benton, 88-years old, murdered by two 16-year old thugs. They robbed him and beat him to death with flashlights as he sat in his car in a parking lot. He was so badly injured that his face was destroyed and doctors couldn’t stop his bleeding.

It’s a good thing Delbert “Shorty” Benton and his generation “fought back” against the ravages of the Great Depression.  Thank God Delbert and his peers “fought back”, especially on Okinawa and Omaha Beach, during WW II.  We should be eternally grateful Delbert and fellow members of “The Greatest Generation” “fought back” in Korea and during the lengthy Cold War.

So now this hero is complicit in his own death because he resisted being robbed by a couple of teenage thugs?  Our nation owes a debt of gratitude (along with our freedom and prosperity) to Shorty Benton and his contemporaries, who in the face of seemingly insurmountable obstacles, “fought back”.

Fighting back didn’t get this remarkable man killed in the Pacific Theatre, but it did get him killed, sitting in his car in Spokane, Washington.  What a tragic and sad commentary, made worse by Police Chief Frank Straub’s stupid comments.
