U.S. District Judge Richard M. Berman, a Democrat, pictured above, has ordered four more years of community service and psychiatric counseling for Conservative filmmaker and author Dinesh D’Souza for violating campaign-finance laws.
D’Souza was originally sentenced to nightly detention at a work-release center in San Diego for eight months and eight hours a week of teaching English to Spanish speakers seeking U.S. citizenship.
The judge said he is extending the sentence, not to “pick on him” but to “help him.” He considers D’Souza’s violation of federal campaign-finance laws to be evidence of a deep-rooted psychological problem and has ordered further counseling. He is doing this despite evidence to the contrary.
Judge Berman has a social work degree and is relying on his own analysis, which contradicts that of several better-trained mental health professionals.
D’Souza has gone from counseling to psychiatric testing to government psychiatric testing, but it wasn’t enough to satisfy the Clinton-appointed judge.
This same judge gave a 30-day sentence and mandated no counseling to an Indian man who bullied and spied on a gay man who killed himself, reportedly because of the bullying. The man said he didn’t know the victim was gay but was convicted. He won’t face deportation, however, because Judge Berman’s sentence was so light. The gay young man is still dead.
D’Souza didn’t kill anyone. He criticized Obama.
The judge thinks his own opinions are paramount. In his statement he wrote,
“What I’m reading in the psychological case notes is compatible with my own impressions,” Berman continued. “The psychological case notes indicate that while Mr. D’Souza is highly intelligent, he has remarkably little insight into his own motivations, that he is not introspective or insightful, but that he tends to see his own actions in an overly positive manner.
“I consider the original crime in this case is an insight issue,” Berman continued. “That Mr. D’Souza committed this crime involves a colossal failure of insight and introspection. The case notes also say Mr. D’Souza has weaknesses in controlling his own impulses and that he is prone to anger in reaction to criticism.”
The judge noted the psychologists “chart indicates Mr. D’Souza tends to deny problems, that he lacks insight into his own behavior, that he is arrogant and intolerant of the feelings of others, while projecting an overly positive image of himself.”
“Therefore, I am ordering Mr. D’Souza to continue psychological counseling with another therapist,” said Berman.
D’Souza is being punished for character flaws? If lacking insight is punishable under the law, why isn’t Barack Obama in a psychiatric facility?
Hey, don’t put me near chocolate, I can’t control myself! Every Democrat I know, save one, is arrogant and intolerant – can we get them counseling?
This is the government and they are here to help!
It is very dangerous to buck the totalitarians. D’Souza is a successful Obama critic whose movies exposed a potential motivation for some of Barack Obama’s actions. He’s also famous for tweeting himself into disfavor with the far-left “tolerant” people.
D’Souza gave the leftists ammunition, however. He violated the law by directing two people to contribute $10,000 each to Wendy Long’s senatorial campaign, promising to reimburse them, which he did.
The donations fell short of it being a crime by $5,000. He was treated like a criminal just the same with a perp walk, a very public arrest, tough release conditions and now a sentence of endless public humiliation to discredit him or help him. You decide. I don’t really know what goes on in Judge Berman’s mind but he does play the role of nanny very well. It sounds like he wants to “cure” Obama critics.
