The DOJ is going to tell administrators and teachers how to discipline and who they can discipline. They will judge success by racial quotas.
Attorney General Loretta Lynch said Tuesday that she is going to continue pushing public schools to abandon “zero tolerance” discipline policies. The administration believes it’s aimed at minority, at risk and LGBT students. The DOJ has plans for interfering in school discipline far beyond zero tolerance rules, however, which are, by the way, not aimed at anyone but children who commit the offenses.
At a National Summit on Youth Violence in Virginia, Lynch said:
“We are working with our partners in the private sector, and of course, the federal government, including Secretary of Education Arne Duncan and Secretary of Labor Tom Perez, to end the school to prison pipeline that sends too many children on the well-worn path from the schoolhouse to the jailhouse.”
My question is why is the federal government and the Department of Justice sticking their nose into public school discipline. It’s another big government power grab. It might be well-intentioned but they don’t even have the right mindset as they go in and try to develop a one-size-fits-all discipline policy for all schools, public and private, throughout the nation.
The U.S. Department of Education isn’t simply concerned about “zero tolerance” policies. In January of last year, they issued the “Guiding Principles: A Resource Guide for Improving School Climate and Discipline.”
The memo made it clear that they want different discipline policies for the most difficult student populations in our schools. They mistakenly believe the policies are creating the discipline problems.
The students who are to get special discipline consideration will include lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) students; homeless and unaccompanied students; corrections-involved students (criminals); students in foster care; pregnant and parenting students; migrant students; English language learners; and others.
And others! Who is left? The only ones who won’t be disciplined under this system are white heterosexuals. Perhaps whites can get in on this with lawsuits so no one will be disciplined.
The government means to end discipline for children who are disciplinary problems.
For now they are recommending, not ordering, but once the government “recommends”, schools are in the position of doing it or being in a vulnerable position if sued. Perhaps the government will pull funds if they don’t tow the line.
From the January 2014 memorandum:
“The U.S. Department of Education and the U.S. Department of Justice (Departments) are issuing this guidance to assist public elementary and secondary schools in meeting their obligations under Federal law to administer student discipline without discriminating on the basis of race, color, or national origin.”
“The strong suggestion here is that schools better be able to show a series of positive interventions before punishment is meted out.”
Then came the threat:
“Regardless of the program adopted, Federal law prohibits public school districts from discriminating in the administration of student discipline based on certain personal characteristics.”
“The Departments [the Departments of Education, Office of Civil Rights, and the DOJ] initiate investigations of student discipline policies and practices at particular schools based on complaints the Departments receive from students, parents, community members, and others about possible racial discrimination in student discipline.”
In other words, schools cannot discipline students who are the most difficult without being under threat and the students will know it. Teachers and administrators will not have a real say.
Even more absurd, the government is going to judge schools by the numbers, not by what they are doing. There will be quotas and the only ones who will be legitimately disciplined are white heterosexual students.
“The Civil Rights Data Collection (CRDC), conducted by OCR, has demonstrated that students of certain racial or ethnic groups tend to be disciplined more than their peers,” the memorandum read.
This is what happens when Big Government interferes in every aspect of our lives.
Leftists think everything can be solved with social workers and psychologists but it’s just not true.
The absurd leftist approach to discipline is already being realized in Oakland. Truth Revolt reported that “board members of California’s Oakland Unified School District unanimously voted on Wednesday to cease suspending students for what they call ‘willful defiance.’ Those behaviors can include swearing/yelling at teachers, refusing direct orders, texting, and storming out of class, to name a few.”
To name a few!
What is worse is when you hear the reason why.
The reason is too many black students are being disciplined in a school system that is predominantly black to begin with.
It’s never the fault of the guilty, it’s always someone else’s fault. In this case, it’s the school’s fault for disciplining too much.
So now we will have students texting, screaming, showing disgusting disrespect for teachers, and basically doing whatever they want.
As an educator for over three decades, half of the time spent with the most difficult populations of students, I can tell you that students need discipline and they want it. They need to know there are repercussions for misbehavior or they develop into sociopaths. If you want to raise a sociopath, take away the consequences and make excuses of their bad behaviors instead.
Leftists don’t want police, they don’t want the military and they don’t want any discipline. In their fairy tale world, this all makes sense.
