NYU Professor Matthew Liao was interviewed on the Sunrise Weekend morning show and during the discussion he explained his very creative way of fighting climate change.
Have you heard of “preimplantation genetic diagnosis”? It’s in vitro fertilization – IVF treatments – which are used for a variety of reasons. Mr. Liao thinks it should be used to create smaller children!
This isn’t a satire by the way.
The interviewer, Andrew O’Keefe, asked Mr Liao if he was interested in genetically engineering smaller children: “Okay. So a range of potential options that you select the genetic material that is bound to lead to smaller children.”
“That’s right,” he said twice.
Another idea he has is to give hormone treatments in utero to create these little people.
These are serious drugs and a serious procedure this professor is talking about.
These smaller people would have a smaller carbon footprint and they’d consume less.
The good professor continued: “That’s right. So, other things being equal larger people consume more energy than smaller people. They also, for example, it takes more energy to transport larger people. They — you need more clothes — fabrics to clothes larger people rather than smaller people. They wear out shoes, carpets, et cetera, et cetera more than smaller people. So think of the life time carbon footprints. That’s quite a lot.”
They wear out carpets! Now there’s a good reason to create wee people artificially.
This is a eugenicist who would make tyrants of old very proud.
Back in 2012, the Atlantic interviewed Mr Liao so don’t think there aren’t people taking him seriously.
Th interview was published under the title, How Engineering the Human Body Could Combat Climate Change and their subtitle was: “From drugs to help you avoid eating meat to genetically engineered cat-like eyes to reduce the need for lighting, a wild interview about changes humans could make to themselves to battle climate change.”
Consuming meat is apparently a no-no. Mr. Liao hates meat eating so much he wrote the following as if it were a reasonable:
Some of the proposed modifications are simple and noninvasive. For instance, many people wish to give up meat for ecological reasons, but lack the willpower to do so on their own. The paper suggests that such individuals could take a pill that would trigger mild nausea upon the ingestion of meat, which would then lead to a lasting aversion to meat-eating.
We do it to cars, so why not people, the article postulates.
This man is a philosopher and a bioethicist. So much for the ethics part. This is what happens when people stop valuing human life which should be so precious to us.
Following this logic, we should artificially manufacture milk and stop breeding cows -their flatulence is unacceptable. Hindus have to find a new animal to revere. Pandas have to go because they eat bamboo which absorbs carbon dioxide. Sea turtles gotta go too. They eat sea grass which is great for absorbing carbon dioxide. Most politicians have to go because they are a significant source of carbon dioxide contributing to global warming. Bill and Hillary Clinton are a targeted duo because they give hot air speeches and there’s too much monetary encouragement for them to give more of them.
