Egypt – From A Secular Dictatorship to Islamist Rule

Khairat el-Shater On His Throne

So much for democracy it seems as Egypt appears to be trading one dictator for another. After a fierce war, it seems that the Brotherhood, which controls 50% of the Parliament and dominates the Assembly, might have reached some kind of agreement with the military as to who will be the next leader of the new government.

If the Brotherhood controls the Parliament, the Assembly and the Presidency, it would mean single party rule, in other words, a dictatorship..

The Brotherhood, in a surprise move, fielded a Presidential candidate, a powerful Brotherhood leader, Khairat el-Shater. He is a wealthy businessman who subscribes to a fairly strict form of Islam (for example, he won’t look a woman in the eye) but is described as a pragmatist as opposed to an ideologue. He was imprisoned by Mubarek for 12 of the last 20 years for money laundering and other crimes.

El-Shatar is known as the Enforcer, though he prefers to be called the Engineer, since he is an engineer. What do you think the chances are that aman who is known as the Enforcer for the Brotherhood is someone who will align with the United States and Israel and not Iran?

If the Egyptian military doesn’t come up with their own candidate, it would likely mean that they reached an agreement with the Brotherhood about the choice of el-Shatar.

The minority democracy party is very concerned that the Brotherhood is reneging on its promise to share power.

“We didn’t have a revolution to end up with a dictatorship of the one party,” said the head of the liberal Free Egyptians Party, Ahmed Said. “If el-Shater is president, will he rule in the name of the people or according to the orders of the Brotherhood?

The Coptic Church and other liberal members have pulled out of the Assembly, calling it a “pointless” constitutional assembly.

The Brotherhood probably plans to use parliament to take control of the Presidency and the new constitution to promote its long-term Islamist agenda.

I should mention here that this is the group of people Obama is going to give $1.5 billion of our tax dollars to for use by their military. Fabulous!
