Bowe Bergdahl posing with terrorist.
Paying ransom for Americans held captive by terrorists isn’t a good idea. It’s tantamount to funding violent jihad, however, we traded five leading terrorists for a deserter and we did nothing for a courageous man.
Whether one agrees with the views of James Foley or note, he was someone with a great reputation who was trying to do the right thing. Bowe Bergdahl abandoned his fellow soldiers and might have colluded with the enemy.
As his fellow soldiers searched for Bergdahl, his platoon mates said he hid from them, putting them in more danger as the Taliban also searched for him.
Please, someone, explain this to me.

As it turns out, the Bergdahl trade by the Pentagon was illegal.
The Government Accountability Office (GAO) said the Defense Department failed to notify the relevant congressional committees at least 30 days in advance. The law, they said is unambiguous and it was illegal. Also illegal was their use of almost a million dollars in funds from the wartime account to make the transfer. The money was not appropriated for that use. It violated the Anti-Defiicency Act.
This administration is completely lawless.
Making a trade with funds as we did is not very different than paying ransom, is it?
“In our view, the meaning of the [law] is clear and unambiguous,” the GAO wrote to nine Republican senators, including Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R., Ky.) and various committees. “Section 8111 prohibits the use of ‘funds appropriated or otherwise made available’ in the Department of Defense Appropriations Act, 2014, to transfer any individual detained at Guantanamo Bay to the custody or control of a foreign entity’ except in accordance” with the law.
The GAO said the relevant committees received phone calls from May 31 – the day of the transfer – to June 1, with written notification coming on June 2.
The Pentagon stands behind its illegal action and defends it as legal despite the fact that it is blatantly illegal, which makes them liars as well as fools.
I’m sick of hearing we don’t leave a man behind. We absolutely do now. We left the men of Benghazi behind, we are leaving Sgt. Tahmooressi behind, we just don’t leave deserters behind apparently.
