A Brazilian soccer player has caused some controversy after signing a new two-year contract after his release from jail. He served nearly seven years of a twenty-two year sentence for strangling his girlfriend after torturing her while she was imprisoned in a shed and feeding her body to his dogs. He said he made a “mistake”.

Goalkeeper Bruno Fernandes de Souza, affectionately known as “Bruno” was out a month when second-tier soccer club Boa Esporte signed him.

His girlfriend was demanding child support for the child they had together so he had her kidnapped, but he says he’s a “good guy” who doesn’t deserve to be attacked.

The Independent quoted him:  “Dude, what happened, happened. I made a mistake, a serious one, but mistakes happen in life. I’m not a bad guy. People tried to bury my dream because of one mistake, but I asked God for forgiveness, so I’m carrying on with my career, dude.”

Yeah, dude, stop picking on him.

Bruno tortured and murdered the woman with the help of his lover, ex-wife and six other people.

He’s actually out on appeal on a legal technicality for killing Eliza Samudio. He confessed to killing the 25-year old former model in 2010 and was sentenced in 2013.

A women’s rights group denounced the light sentence, saying, “A woman-killer must not be allowed a life acclaimed by the media. Bruno is no longer just a goalkeeper; his notoriety reflects the ease with which a woman’s life is forgotten in the interests of a sporting career.”

There is outrage in Brazil, particularly among victims’ groups, but the soccer club is not backing down.
