Heitkamp Wants to Address Mental Health Issues Not Extreme Gun Control

Senator Heitkamp would like to see mental health issues addressed with everything on the table. The Washington Post is talking about extreme gun control measures and she says that  if that is what comes to the table,

“That’s way, way in extreme of what I think is necessary or even should be talked about. And it’s not going to pass,” Heitkamp said on “This Week.”

“To me, one of the issues that I think comes — screams out of this — is the issue of mental health and the care for the mentally ill in our country, especially the dangerously mentally ill. And so we need to have a broad discussion before we start talking about gun control,” Heitkamp said.

The Washington Post reported this Saturday that the Biden Commissions plans to go beyond the 1994 weapons assault ban to include “universal background checks for firearm buyers, track the movement and sale of weapons through a national database, strengthen mental health checks, and stiffen penalties for carrying guns near schools or giving them to minors.” [WaPo]

The WH and Mayor Bloomberg are in contact on the issue – never a good thing. Bloomberg’s measures in NYC are among the most extreme.

The WaPo has been running a series of anti-gun articles with gun facts that omit too much for them to be considered accurate – they’re slanted. For instance, they fail to consider that making a school a gun-free zone is problematic and they blame the school shootings on poor gun control alone. The NRA wants to have armed guards at every school in the nation. As an educator, I can tell you that armed guards could be put at every school in the nation.

No one is mentioning that the prior mass shootings involved drug-addled deranged individuals. We don’t know if the last shooter was involved with drugs and might never know. Would they tell us?

No one will talk about the more serious core issue – mental health. The Obama administration only wants to control access to guns while ignoring the extremely poor mental health care in this country.

In response to the Newtown tragedy, both sides are gearing up for a fight. The Obama administration will overreach on the gun control issue. If the congress can’t get it done, President Obama will rule by Fiat on this issue and there is not a thing anyone will do about it.
