The refugee crisis overwhelming the EU is spilling over into the United States. Demands for the U.S. to take more are growing in the mainstream media and on Capitol Hill.
There is a debate raging on whether the U.S. should take in large numbers of Syrian refugees even though we have no way to vet them. The FBI and intelligence agencies tell us they can’t be screened. The fact is, however, that we will do it anyway.
Breitbart News posted an article, Federal Data: U.S. Annually Admits Quarter Of A Million Muslim Migrants, on the 14th. The results of their research indicates that the United States is now admitting more than a quarter of a million Muslim migrants each fiscal year. President Obama intends to add another 10,000 Syrian migrants on top of that though some Democrats have called for as many as 130,000 Syrians and another 100,000 additional refugees.
In 2013 alone, according to the data, 117,423 migrants from Muslim-majority countries were permanently resettled within the United State. Additionally in 2013, the United States voluntarily admitted an extra 122,921 temporary migrants from Muslim countries as foreign students and foreign workers as well as 39,932 refugees and asylees from Muslim countries.
The U.S. admits a number of Muslim migrants larger in size than the entire population of Des Moines, Iowa; Lincoln, Nebraska; or Dayton, Ohio in a single fiscal year.
This is at a time when there is a worldwide jihad.
Yahoo News and The Indian Express are reporting that Islamist extremists in Germany are trying to recruit some of the growing numbers of asylum seekers reaching the country, according to Intelligence services quoted by the German news agency DPA. The Islamic extremists “are trying to approach the young unaccompanied refugees, who arrive in our country without their families and are particularly looking for contacts and support.”
We have seen that in the United States, most notably in Minneapolis.
Also to be considered are the financial aspects.
The refugee crisis in Europe has taken an unusual turn which has been pointed out at Mises.
The reference card posted above was created by human smugglers who are operating throughout the Middle East, Turkey, and North Africa. They give these to potential clients. Refugees no longer seek the first or safest point of entry. They are shopping for nations with the most lucrative benefit package. It is a major incentive for migration and many are not leaving their home countries because they have to leave.
The migration is part humanitarian crisis but there is a lot more going on. People are lured by the benefits but have to travel dangerous routes to get there, creating, as Mises writer Justin Murray wrote, a perfect storm.
Some say that taking in excessive number of migrants is a recipe for cultural suicide and economic disaster, with a better choice being the creation of safe zones.
The United States has similar benefits packages to the EU and needs to be careful. We have open borders and an ever-growing welfare state.
In fact, thanks to what has gone on in California and what is being promoted by the anti-American Governor Jerry Brown, LA is now calling itself the Northern Capital of Latin America.
There is also the issue of taking in people with radically different laws who don’t necessarily want to assimilate.
The Polling Company for the Center for Security Policy (CSP) conducted a survey of Muslims in the United States and a corresponding poll of the general population.
A majority (51%) agreed that “Muslims in America should have the choice of being governed according to shariah.” When that question was put to the broader U.S. population, the overwhelming majority held that shariah should not displace the U.S. Constitution (86% to 2%).
Only 39% of those Muslims polled said that Muslims in the U.S. should be subject to American courts.
Nearly a quarter of the Muslims polled believed that, “It is legitimate to use violence to punish those who give offense to Islam by, for example, portraying the prophet Mohammed.”
The broader survey found that a 63% majority of those sampled said that “the freedom to engage in expression that offends Muslims or anybody else is guaranteed by the U.S. Constitution and cannot be restricted.”
Nearly one-fifth of Muslim respondents said that the use of violence in the United States is justified in order to make shariah the law of the land in this country.
The facts are that we are taking in large numbers of refugees each year and many are from failed states where records are poor at best. The U.N. is vetting them.
Many have radically different beliefs and whether we like it or not, our pro-Islam president has taken out his pen and phone and is bringing them in no matter what Americans want.
