The IG’s report on Tea Party targeting by the IRS was released today. They blamed it on ineffective management.
The IRS used “inappropriate criteria” to scrutinize conservative groups and allowed said criteria to remain in place for at least 18 months.
In another development, ProPublica, the left-leaning investigative reporting entity, said that the IRS gave them the applications for nine pending nonprofits including Karl Rove’s Crossroads GPS. They said no liberal organization applications were sent to them.
Original Story: It was well-known in Washington that the IRS was targeting the Tea Party. This kind of targeting would have to be approved fairly high up and was not decided by low-level workers.
Of course Obama didn’t know. Jay Carney didn’t know either.
Washington Post said Tuesday that the IRS targeting scandal took place in DC, not just Cincinnati:
Internal Revenue Service officials in Washington and at least two other offices were involved with investigating conservative groups seeking tax-exempt status, making clear that the effort reached well beyond the branch in Cincinnati that was initially blamed, according to documents obtained by The Washington Post.
IRS officials at the agency’s Washington headquarters sent queries to conservative groups asking about their donors and other aspects of their operations, while officials in the El Monte and Laguna Niguel offices in California sent similar questionnaires to tea-party-affiliated groups, the documents show…read the full story at the Washington Post.
And that’s not all. The Washington Examiner found that the same man who targeted anti-Obama groups also investigated anti-Clinton organizations while an agent.
I’m sure that Obama didn’t know of course. He doesn’t know anything nor does Jay Carney.
Steven T. Miller, the acting IRS commissioner who managed the division that has admitted targeting anti-Obama Tea Party groups, was one of several agents who investigated anti-Clinton organizations including Judicial Watch during that Democrat’s administration, according to court documents and interviews.
Miller, who headed the IRS Services and Enforcement Division from 2009 until the end of last year, is named in court documents as part of a trio of Internal Revenue Service officials who allegedly characterized the 1998-2001 investigation of Judicial Watch as politically motivated…keep reading at The Washington Examiner
