By now most have heard about the Journal News editors and publisher who two weeks ago released the names and addresses of 33,614 gun owners in Rockland and Westchester counties, putting maps of their exact locations alongside the information.
The information appeared with the article “The Gun Owner Next Door: What You Don’t Know About the Weapons in Your Neighborhood,”
The information on the gun owners was obtained with a FOIA request and it is apparently legal to publish this information in New York. Ethical is quite another question.
The only reason to do what they did was to pillory legal gun owners and treat them like sex offenders. They want gun owners embarrassed and ostracized. The invasion of privacy, without regard for the gun owners’ safety, is breathtaking.
If only they put as much effort into real criminals, we might have two safer counties.
One gun owner, a woman, had been free of her stalker for several years but is being stalked once again since the information was released. She and her three daughters now get to live in terror.
Former DA Jeanine Pirro is afraid for her life. She put a lot of bad people in jail.
Twenty-five percent of the maps are not accurate. They include deceased, former gun owners, permit holders who let the permit lapse, and so on.
It gets worse. Prisoners are looking up information on their guards and threatening their lives. The Correction Officers have asked the Journal News Editors to withdraw the maps but they have refused. They obviously do not care if anyone dies.
Putnam County officials have refused to release the information on gun owners to the Journal News for safety reasons. As they said, this is not a gun issue, it is a safety issue. If only the clerks in the other two counties had their courage and moral character.
If you would like to contact the editors or publisher, you can call their offices at 1-800-942-1010 (toll free). I have their addresses with maps but will hold that information back for now.
