New mom in Oaxaca forced to give birth in the grass. The hospital wouldn’t let her in.
We all know by now that ObamaCare is meant to be a stopover on the road to universal healthcare – Obama’s grand vision for America. A number of countries already have it and Mexico is one.
Look to Mexico to discover what happens when big government is in charge of everyone’s every health need. Take the Mexican babies born on the steps of hospitals in Oaxaca for example.
In 1983, Mexico passed a constitutional amendment giving every Mexican the legal right to health care. The states gradually went along.
Infant mortality was double the national average in Oaxaca so the officials there made it mandatory for women to have their babies in hospitals or clinics instead of at home with midwives, but they mandated it without a corresponding increase in medical staff. As a result, women are giving birth on the steps to the hospitals, on the grass, and in cars. The medical personnel don’t let them in, saying there aren’t enough doctors to take care of them.
The women in question are almost always darker-skinned women, mostly indigenous, as Mexico’s native groups are known, and some patients say it exposes the discrimination that underlies Mexico’s health care system.
The health secretary, concerned about the negative publicity, has taken to suspending and firing doctors who denied pregnant women entry to the hospital, but it is still going on.
Medical professionals scoff at the idea of punishing doctors when the real problem is an overburdened system.
The indigenous families who fall victim to this neglect take video and photos to bring the problem to public consciousness.
In the Unites States we might have enough doctors, there is some dispute about that, but it is very unclear how many patients will be able to pay for them.
Insurance plans are unaffordable for many and the rates are going up. There will still be 30 million uninsured ten years from now and the bureaucracy shouldn’t prove any better if today’s problems are any portent of things to come. We know our government targets people, it wouldn’t be far-fetched to imagine them weaponizing healthcare.
Yes, Mexico might very well hold the secret to our future healthcare here in the States.
