NASA Blasted By Former Astronauts for Support of Unproven Global Warming

We’ve got to ride this global warming issue.
Even if the theory of global warming is wrong,
we will be doing the right thing in terms of
economic and environmental policy.

– Timothy Wirth,
President of the UN Foundation

NASA will lose their reputation, so say former astronauts, and it is all thanks to a political activist who also happens to be a scientist.

Forty-nine former Astronauts and Directors blasted NASA for supporting the unproven global warming theory now masquerading under the obfuscating term, “climate change.” NASA is becoming a political organization and ignoring their own scientific data thanks to one James Hansen.

NASA scientist James Hansen was a global alarmist early on, insisting that there was proof-positive that humans caused global warming. He is also a political activist who uses NASA as a sounding board for his fear mongering even though NASA’s data contradicts his statements.

He is using NASA to spread an unproven theory instead of ignoring the politics and relying on objective evaluative data.

NASA has an entire site dedicated to climate change – who can disagree with climate change? Global warming of course is a different thing but nothing will stop James Hansen as he continues sounding the alarm.

Hansen and his fellow fear-mongers say that CO2 and global temperatures correlate so that proves the case – how do we know which is the chicken and which is the egg? They ignore that point.

Greenhouse gases include H2O, CH4, N2O and CO2 is a minor part with the human contribution being only a minor part of that.

There is evidence that CO2 has been as much as 16 times today’s levels. It is known that there was a Medieval Warming Period followed by a minor Ice Age.

CO2 isn’t even a large part of “greenhouse gases” but has become pilloried. We need CO2.

On March 28th, Charles Bolden Jr. received a letter from 49 former esteemed employees asking NASA and the Goddard Institute for Space Studies to “refrain from including unproven remarks in public releases and websites” because “it is clear that the science is NOT settled.”

“As former NASA employees, we feel that NASA’s advocacy of an extreme position, prior to a thorough study of the possible overwhelming impact of natural climate drivers is inappropriate,” the letter reads.

The group said that the statements that “man-made carbon dioxide is having a catastrophic impact on global climate change are not substantiated.”

They further said, “We request that NASA refrain from including unproven and unsupported remarks in its future releases and websites on this subject. At risk is damage to the exemplary reputation of NASA..”

The full text of the letter follows:

The Honorable Charles Bolden, Jr.
NASA Administrator
NASA Headquarters
Washington, D.C. 20546-0001

Dear Charlie,

We, the undersigned, respectfully request that NASA and the Goddard Institute for Space Studies (GISS) refrain from including unproven remarks in public releases and websites. We believe the claims by NASA and GISS, that man-made carbon dioxide is having a catastrophic impact on global climate change are not substantiated, especially when considering thousands of years of empirical data. With hundreds of well-known climate scientists and tens of thousands of other scientists publicly declaring their disbelief in the catastrophic forecasts, coming particularly from the GISS leadership, it is clear that the science is NOT settled.

The unbridled advocacy of CO2 being the major cause of climate change is unbecoming of NASA’s history of making an objective assessment of all available scientific data prior to making decisions or public statements.

As former NASA employees, we feel that NASA’s advocacy of an extreme position, prior to a thorough study of the possible overwhelming impact of natural climate drivers is inappropriate. We request that NASA refrain from including unproven and unsupported remarks in its future releases and websites on this subject. At risk is damage to the exemplary reputation of NASA, NASA’s current or former scientists and employees, and even the reputation of science itself.

For additional information regarding the science behind our concern, we recommend that you contact Harrison Schmitt or Walter Cunningham, or others they can recommend to you.

Thank you for considering this request.

Sincerely,

(Attached signatures)
