New York City Scanners Trash the 4th Amendment

Miss Anders…I didn’t recognize you with your clothes on.

NYC, the Big Apple, the city that never sleeps, Gotham City, the Melting Pot, the city with cameras everywhere, is soon to be the city of virtual pat downs.

NYPD Commissioner Ray Kelly is working with the Pentagon to install Terahertz Imagining Detection scanners, high-tech radiation detectors that measure the energy that is emitted from a persons’ body up to 16 feet away and they can detect any blockages, like a gun (CBS).

What it can do is “allow the NYPD to conduct illegal searches by means of scanning anyone walking the streets of New York,” according to the report at RT.com. “Any object on your person could be privy to the eyes of the detector, and any suspicious screens can prompt police officers to search someone on suspicion of having a gun, or anything else, under their clothes.”

Ray Kelly says that the scanners will only be used in “reasonably suspicious circumstances.”

I don’t know how that can be true since they are going to be mounted on poles, vans, police cars – that sounds like they will be everywhere like the 2000 mounted cameras.

The 4th Amendment to the Constitution states – ‘The right of the people to be secure in their persons, houses, papers, and effects, against unreasonable searches and seizures, shall not be violated, and no Warrants shall issue, but upon probable cause, supported by Oath or affirmation, and particularly describing the place to be searched, and the persons or things to be seized.’

These scanners bore right through your clothes while you’re sitting, strolling, standing, etc.

The scanners make the 4th amendment null and void it seems. Is that okay with people?

I don’t know how accurate the following is but it does come out of MIT. According to MIT’s Technology Review, the THz waves used by the scanners “unzip double-stranded DNA, creating bubbles in the double strand that could significantly interfere with processes such as gene expression and DNA replication.”

In other words, the scanners could also be very bad for your health.

I know we are now under the threat of terrorism and armed criminals should be eliminated, but what about our freedom and at what point do the police become the terrorists?
