Most of the media has reported that the president reaffirmed support and respect for police at the annual police conference Tuesday, but they didn’t necessarily report the entire speech which was aimed at gun control.
He also made it clear that he wants people to listen to TV and Radio stations that support his viewpoint.
At the annual International Association of Chiefs of Police conference of 14,000 law enforcement professionals and vendors in Chicago on Tuesday, President Obama talked gun control using a flawed study. He also spent time complaining about not having enough money. That’s rich coming from the man who has run up $10 trillion in debt.
He always has a “but” when the police are involved. His “but” was but we need to reform the criminal justice system, but the police have a poor relationship with communities of color (poor neighborhoods), and but we need more gun control laws.
President Obama said police are too often scapegoated when society’s problems are at the root of violent crime. That’s ironic since he’s one of those scapegoating police. It’s remarkable how he purports to support the opposite of what he actually does.
“We can’t expect you to contain and control problems that the rest of us aren’t willing to face or do anything about,” he said, referring to gun control and a more generous budget.
Obama called for universal background checks and spoke about the importance of gun control laws in order to protect the lives of police officers and quoted from a worthless study.
“And the fact is that in states with high gun ownership, police officers are three times more likely to be murdered than in states with low gun ownership,” Pres. Obama said. “That is a fact. So you know that more guns on the streets do not make you or your communities safer.”
Obama is quoting from what has been described by conservative analysts as a deeply flawed study published on August 14th in The American Journal of Public Health. The author of the study David Swedler received his PhD. from the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School for Public Health in 2001 and it’s hard to believe he was taught to be neutral on the subject at a school funded by gun grabber Michael Bloomberg.
One example of a problem with the study was the omission of the fact that according to the FBI, from 2004 to 2013, 46 percent of officer murderers had prior arrests for crimes of violence, 63 percent of them had been convicted on prior criminal charges, and 50 percent had received probation or parole to prior criminal charges!
The empirical work was done in a very non-standard way with the only control being for differences across states and not over time.
The NRA pointed out that Law enforcement officer (LEO) killings have been decreasing while ownership of firearms has been increasing dramatically.
From 1993 to 2013, the most recent year of data from the FBI and BATFE, the annual number of law enforcement officers feloniously killed dropped 61 percent, the number killed with firearms dropped 61 percent, and the number with handguns dropped 64 percent, while the American people acquired 140 million new firearms, including 64 million new handguns.
In 2013, the number of law enforcement officers feloniously killed by any means, with any firearms, or with handguns was less than half the annual average of the last 20 years.
Some states with the biggest rates of gun ownership have recorded zero murders of officers in some years of the study period. Wyoming being one example.
Killings of law enforcement officers have been on the decline between 2003 and 2013, while purchases of new handguns have been on the rise.
President Obama will continue to quote the study for the uninformed public who rely on soundbites.
“It is easier in some communities to find a gun than to find fresh vegetables at a supermarket,” he continued. “That is just a fact.”
Of course that is a fact in gang areas.
Don’t listen to certain TV or radio shows that say Obama is trying to take our guns, Obama said, “nobody’s doing that.”
Obama wants you to listen to radio and TV shows that agree with him.
In this clip, he nudges us some more to not listen to conservative radio or watch Fox – it’s subtle. He also pretends he supports the police.
