According to Shreveport Overton Brooks V. A. Medical Center, veterans residing in Shreveport Manor (a nursing home owned by Gamble Guest Care) will be forced to leave their residences because the nursing home cannot afford to raise the minimum wage from $7.25 to $10.10 an hour as mandated by Mr. Obama’s minimum wage fiat for federal workers.
As long as a nursing home takes government funds, their employees are considered federal workers. If their salaries aren’t raised, the nursing home is deemed to have not met the government standards.
In a statement, Gamble Guest Care CEO Matt Machen said, in part, “The additional labor expenses are simply unaffordable. As such, many long term care providers have indicated that they will no longer seek or renew V.A. contracts.”
This will probably get worse as more and more nursing home contracts expire.
The V.A. said it will only affect 1% of veterans and they will work out something for them using Medicaid or Medicare funds until they can find another home for the veterans.
It’s not only about the 1%, it’s about the injudiciousness of the fiat. Many businesses simply can’t afford it. This is why one person – Mr. Obama – shouldn’t be making all the decisions.
Former Marine A.J. Crain just wheeled himself into his new room at Shreveport Manor when he got the news that the home’s contract will end this month.
“We fought all your wars, and now we’re broke. Where do we go from here?” Crain asks.
“We gotta go. Simple as that. We gotta go,” says Vietnam War Bronze Star and Purple Heart recipient John Washington.
“I think it’s very wrong. I think it’s very distasteful,” Washington goes on to say about Shreveport Manor’s decision. “I mean some of these people here work their backsides off to keep this place going,” he said, pointing to a woman changing his bed.
The employees undoubtedly deserve a raise, but if the nursing homes can’t afford it, they can’t afford it. They work on a low profit margin.
Veteran and war hero John Washington
You’d think the government would at least grandfather theses nursing homes into this Obama mess.
