Parallels Between Nixon and Obama Grow by the Day

Nixon and Obama are looking more alike every day. Some Oval Office recordings have turned up that indicate Nixon wanted to outlaw the private ownership of guns.

I don’t know why any individual should have a right to have a revolver in his house,’ Nixon said in a taped conversation with aides. ‘The kids usually kill themselves with it and so forth.’ He asked why ‘can’t we go after handguns, period?’

Nixon went on: ‘I know the rifle association will be against it, the gun makers will be against it.’ But ‘people should not have handguns.’ He laced his comments with obscenities, as was typical.

This isn’t the only area in which Nixon and Obama share ideals.

Nixon liked to keep enemies lists and bully people who didn’t go along, Obama likes to keep kill lists and seeks revenge when possible. Obama has gone one further. He keeps records on our school children with an “invasive tracking system.” [Michelle Malkin]

Neither seemed to be strong supporters of the First Amendment or the Second.

Nixon believed in healthcare for all paid for by employers and Obama believes in healthcare for all paid for by taxpayers.

In August, 1971, Nixon announced a freeze on all prices and wages throughout the United States. He said that after the 90-day freeze, increases would have to be approved by a “Pay Board” and a “Price Commission.” There was no emergency precipitating this, but it helped with his re-election. It was called the “Economic Stabilization Act of 1970” and it was wildly popular.[Reason]

It didn’t work just as President Obama’s efforts to control wages and prices won’t work.

Nixon came up with the Clean Air Act, OSHA, and the EPA. He passed slews of regulations. He put through a minimum tax on the wealthy and believed in a guaranteed income for all Americans. He was the architect of the “Open Door Policy” with China. [Doug Schoen]

In his favor, he did end the Cold War.

Nixon liked big government, government spending, and big social safety net programs. When I think of Nixon and Obama, I think “Imperial Presidency.”

Personally, I don’t see Nixon as the Conservative everyone else claims he was and I think the similarities to President Obama are mounting.

The left doesn’t like it when Obama is compared with Nixon. Oh well.
