Piers Morgan, the busybody Brit who came to America to tell us what Amendments we can keep in our Constitution, is leaving CNN and hopefully the country though I’m reasonably sure the Brits aren’t eager to have him back.
His pitifully low ratings have brought him and CNN to the realization that they need to pull them plug on his dud show which is in a primetime spot.
In a conversation with David Carr at the NY Times, Morgan said this:
“It’s been a painful period and lately we have taken a bath in the ratings,” he said, adding that although there had been times when the show connected in terms of audience, slow news days were problematic.
“Look, I am a British guy debating American cultural issues, including guns, which has been very polarizing, and there is no doubt that there are many in the audience who are tired of me banging on about it,” he said. “That’s run its course and Jeff and I have been talking for some time about different ways of using me.”
If Morgan thinks it’s the news cycle, how come his competitors were able to deal with the “slow” news cycle?
If it’s been painful for him, he should know how painful it’s been for we the viewers.
And, yes, the whole telling us what to do with our Second Amendment thing was quite annoying. He was here in the States five minutes when he decided to tell us what to do and how we might rewrite the Constitution.
His controversies in Britain are probably what sent him flying over the Atlantic to the United States. Prime Minister Tony Blair’s wife once referred to him as “a man with no moral compass”. The paper he oversaw as editor – The Daily Mirror – once published photos of Naomi Campbell at a Narcotics Anonymous meeting. The House of Lords found in her favor and he brushed the story off as “a good day for lying, drug-abusing prima donnas”.
His real crime though was not being PC enough when he interviewed a transgender woman recently. He said she grew up as a boy and went to Thailand for reassignment surgery at age 18. He also discussed how she revealed her original identity to her boyfriend. It went over badly and upset the left. Once a far-left host loses the transgenders and their supporters, it’s over.
Supposedly, CNN President Jeff Zucker is looking for a place to utilize Morgan’s skills as an interviewer during special events. That should bring in as much of an audience as his show.
He’s stunningly opinionated and hangs out on Twitter stalking victims who disagree with him or of whom he disapproves. I won’t miss him.
Morgan might have fared better if he acted like he liked America, even just a little bit.
