Update: 3/4/12: Fluke has been exposed as a poser. Fluke is not 23, she’s 30, and has a long history of political activism. She is a longtime proponent of reproductive justice, whatever that is.
…Sandra is the Development Editor of the Journal of Gender and the Law, and served as the President of Law Students for Reproductive Justice, and the Vice President of the Women’s Legal Alliance. In her first year, she also co-founded a campus committee addressing human trafficking. Cornell University awarded her a B. S. in Policy Analysis & Management, as well as Feminist, Gender, & Sexuality Studies in 2003. Other notations include her gay rights activism and other “women’s rights” activism. No mention made of her concern for the rights of men…
…Fluke took her campaign against “conservative” universities on the road and led seminars to that end held at Berkeley…
…Another thing is that Democrats tried to foist this faux “expert” on a congressional committee hearing before. In the middle of February, the House Oversight Committee held a hearing to hear expert testimony on President Obama’s decision to force religious organizations to fund contraception use for employees.
The hearing had actual experts that spoke on both sides of the issue but the meeting was about the Constitutional issue of religious freedom, not so-called “reproductive rights.” Mz. Fluke’s inclusion as a speaker was therefore denied because she is neither an expert on the Constitution, interested in religious freedom, nor is she an actual expert on the medical uses of contraception. She was merely a left-wing activist with no pertinent expertise.
This is why Representative Nancy Pelosi (D, CA) held her own special hearing to give Fluke her platform for activism. Amusingly, while Democrats complained that it was a crime Fluke was not allowed to testify at the earlier hearing, in Pelosi’s dog and pony show, Fluke was the only one allowed to speak. Hypocrisy, thy name is Democrat…(Big Journalism – the story has been removed)
I don’t know why we are talking about her contraceptives anyway. The cause is freedom.
Original Story: 3/2/12: Fluke is a non sequitur and a talking point for the left. She is the Cindy Sheehan of the HHS mandate which violates freedom of religion.
She is a tool for the left in their efforts to change the debate from one of freedom of religion into a woman’s health issue. The woman’s health issue is a straw man.
The premise of her entire spiel to Congress is based on her belief that contraceptives/abortifacients are a right, not just for people who need them for health reasons, but for everyone, and they must be provided by religious facilities who believe it violates their conscience.
Fluke falsely claims (without evidence) that the religious concerns were met by the Obama accommodation. That is not the case. Self-insured religious facilities are not dealt with. In addition, the fact that the mandate is indirect in some cases does not remove the violation of religious conscience. What happens when they have to pay for abortions?
Fluke rambled on with unsubstantiated stories about women at Georgetown who were raped, had endometriosis, and cysts and who needed contraceptives but didn’t get them because their insurance didn’t cover them.
Apparently none of them know about the free contraceptives offered by Planned Parenthood and Medicaid. There are many clinics who will dispense them for free.
Fluke then claims that they cost $3000 a year. That figure is absurd. They cost $15 – $50 a month according to Planned Parenthood.
Fluke wants everyone to get their contraceptives covered, even those who want them for their sexual romps.
This is women’s rights? Women’s health?
In terms of women’s health, how about all the studies that show various forms of contraception can cause health problems. Read here: Medical News
Fluke has to know that contraceptives can be obtained for free, but she wants a Catholic university – in this case Georgetown – to provide them for free.
She is a soldier in the war against religious freedom and is making a name for herself as she launches her legal career and schmoozes with Nancy Pelosi and Barack Obama.
Barack Obama called Ms. Fluke to offer his support after radio talk show host, Rush Limbaugh, joked inappropriately about her needing contraceptives (update – Rush L apologized as well he should have). It’s too bad the President doesn’t care one-tenth as much about our soldiers who are being treated like sitting ducks in Afghanistan.
Why don’t we pay for their vacations to Club Med? They are probably stressed out and need the rest so that’s a health issue too. This whole thing is a canard. The argument is freedom, not solely freedom of religion, but all our freedoms. Obamacare will deprive us of freedom, even if it violates our conscience – that fact is now clear. The health issue is the straw man the left is using divert peoples’ attention from the facts.
