Maryland imam Suleiman Anwar Bengharsa openly and actively supports ISIS or IS, the Islamic State and praises beheadings. He was once a strong opponent of terrorism but now supports it, The Washington Post reported. He appears to have been involved in buying weapons for illicit purposes and has been in possession of $900,000 though he does not have any source of income.
FBI search warrants were accidentally unsealed in a Michigan terrorism case and they alleged that Bengharsa, 59, provided money to Detroit resident Sebastian Gregerson, who authorities say used it in 2015 to buy weapons.
“There is reason to believe Bengharsa and Gregerson are engaged in discussions and preparations for some violent attack on behalf of [ISIS],” an FBI agent concluded in the warrants, first reported by the Detroit News.
It’s a year later and Bnegharsa, who was once a Maryland prison chaplain [probably radicalizing the prisoners] has not been charged — he was facing explosives charges. It is not even known if the investigation is active and the feds are mum on it.
Maybe our FBI has been compromised and doesn’t even know there is such a thing as radical Islamic terrorism.
Bengharsa is also silent on the issue.
“It’s ridiculous. All I can say is it’s ridiculous,” Bengharsa told The Washington Post. “If this was the case, why haven’t they come to arrest me?”
Former federal prosecutors and legal experts said the most likely reason is that authorities do not have the evidence to charge Bengharsa. They said the case illustrates the challenge of dealing with religious leaders who spout rhetoric in the service of the nation’s enemies.
Fox News reported that authorities said he hasn’t broken any laws.
Imams are allowed to push their followers toward radicalism as long as they don’t call for violence or provide material support to terrorists.
“It is rare to find an imam, who has such a strict interpretation of Islam and who is so willfully willing to call out others in the community as apostates,” said Oren Segal, director of the Anti-Defamation League’s Center on Extremism. “That is pretty remarkable.”
Gregerson purchased AK-47 magazines. Bengharsa who has no job and no income received more than $900,000 which was wire-transferred into his account from an unnamed source and he sent some of it to an unnamed person in Yemen.
Bengharsa holds a master’s degree in public policy and speaks five languages, according to his résumé and court documents. A number of officials with Muslim groups said he was little-known in the local community.
Before his dealings with Gregerson last year, no one knew much about him, certainly not authorities.
Bengharsa claims he worked as an imam at Masjid Umar in Woodlawn, Md. from 2011 – 2014.
If we treated terrorists as terrorists instead of criminals, something would have been done with these men by now.
Last November, the Sentinel compiled a short list of terror mill mosques in the United States which gives a sampling of the 83 known radicalized mosques in the U.S.
The number of mosques in the U.S. overall are up 74% since the year 2000 so that number might have changed.
