The heartbreaking story of Matt McQuinn, who gave his life to save his girlfriend Samantha Yowler, highlights the unfairness of life. When the shooting started, this courageous young man dove in front of his girlfriend and took three bullets for her. His girlfriend, Samantha Yowler, was also wounded in the attack.
How many people would give their life for another? It is the ultimate sacrifice of a courageous man who demonstrated great love. Meanwhile the cowardly killer lives. Life isn’t fair but I do believe there is a higher power who will reward Matt McQuinn. How can you see a person like Matt McQuinn and not believe in God?
Matt McQuinn and Samantha Yowler had only recently moved to Aurora.
His funeral was held at Maiden Lane Church of God in Ohio, Texas. Samantha Yowler wept quietly as she sat next to his parents.
Pastor Herb Shaffer, who is also McQuinn’s uncle, said his nephew had been a gift to his family since he was born and that his actions in Colorado were just one example of his selflessness.
He spoke of how McQuinn called his mother three times the day before she had surgery because he was upset that he couldn’t be there in person and wanted to make sure she was OK. [SunTimes]
Miss Yowler’s courageous brother Nick also protected his sister and escaped unharmed.
The funeral of aspiring sports journalist, Jessica Ghawi took place today in her hometown of San Antonio, Texas. The service was at Community Bible Church in Bulverde, Texas. When her brother went to Aurora for her remains, he said it was the hardest thing he has had to do.
Her story is one of cruel irony. Two months before she was murdered, she was in a Toronto mall and had a bad feeling which made her leave the mall. She missed a gunman at the mall who killed two and left several injured by minutes.
She blogged that it reminded her “how fragile life was. “I was reminded that we don’t know when or where our time on Earth will end. When or where we will breathe our last breath,” she wrote.
Ms. Ghawi, who used the last name of Redfield, moved to Colorado a year before her death. From all accounts, Jessica Ghawi was a wonderful lady who was much beloved for her caring, her wit, and charm. She deserved so much better.
Jessica Ghawi’s brother Jordan, 26, a student, firefighter and paramedic in Texas, traveled to Colorado on Friday morning and wrote in detail about his sister’s final moments, as told to him by their mutual friend Brent.
“Jessica and Brent were seated in the middle portion of the theatre when a device was thrown into the theatre that produced a ‘hissing’ sound,” Jordan wrote. “The theatre then began to fill with smoke which is when patrons began to move from their seats. At that time, shots were fired.”
He continued in chilling detail.
Brent and Jessica dropped for cover. “Brent then heard Jessica scream and noticed that she was struck by a round in the leg,” Jordan wrote. “Brent, began holding pressure on the wound and attempted to calm Jessica.”
“It was at this time that Brent took a round to his lower extremities. While still administering first aid, Brent noticed that Jessica was no longer screaming. He advised that he looked over to Jessica and saw what appeared to be an entry wound to her head.”
Jordan later wrote that he received word from the coroner’s office that his sister indeed died from injuries sustained during the shooting.
“Let us remember the names of the victims and not the name of the coward who committed this act,” Jordan Tweeted Friday afternoon.
