Turkey is our NATO ally and a bad one at that. Their Prime Minister, Recep Erdogan, has been verbally raging against our ally Israel, fomenting hatred towards Israel because of alleged “crimes” by Israel against Hamas. That is the same Hamas that has sent a thousand rockets raining down on Israel this year alone.
President Obama has said nothing.
Turkey was Israel’s only mid-East ally until the flotilla in 2010 in which nine Turks were killed. The relationship has been strained since that time.
Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan on Tuesday rejected Israel’s assertion that its strikes on Hamas positions in the Gaza Strip were self-defense, saying the Jewish state is carrying out “ethnic cleansing” against Palestinians.
In a conference of the Eurasian Islamic Council in Istanbul held on Monday, the Turkish prime minister accused Israel of carrying out “terrorist acts” in Gaza.
He further added, “those who associate Islam with terrorism close their eyes in the face of mass killing of Muslims, turn their heads from the massacre of children in Gaza”.
“For this reason, I say that Israel is a terrorist state, and its acts are terrorist acts,” he added.
“No one can say Israel is using its right to self-defense,” Erdogan told lawmakers from his party in a speech Tuesday at the Turkish parliament in Ankara. “Israel is snubbing peace in the region, stomping on international law and carrying out ethnic cleansing against a people.”
Erdogan called Israel a “pirate state” that is “waging terrorism in the Middle East.” He also accused the United Nations of being absent from conflicts in which Muslims were victims.
“Palestinian lands are being invaded step by step,” he said. “Sooner or later, Israel will pay the price for all of the oppressed people it has martyred.”
On Saturday, Erdogan spoke firmly against Israel yet again. In a speech given at Cairo University he accused Israel of “turning the region into a blood swamp. Every drop of Palestinian blood is pouring from the veins of all Muslims and every tear dropping from their eyes is our tear too.”
He also decried Israel’s airstrikes on Gaza on Friday as a pre-election stunt in which innocent people are being killed. “Before this election they (Israel) shot these innocent people in Gaza for reasons they fabricated,” he told reporters in Istanbul.
President Obama is speechless as one of our NATO allies demonizes another.
An AP reporter took on the State Department’s spineless Victoria Nuland for State’s complete lack of response to Erdogen’s vicious rhetorical attacks:
After this, I might have to stop calling the AP, Associated Pravda.
Erdogen’s response to the flotilla in 2010:
Business channels are still open between Israel and Turkey but Israelis no longer use Turkey as a favored tourist destination.
Turkey has cracked down on free speech of late. Since August 1st, 76 journalists have been imprisoned. Turkey is headed in the wrong direction.
Turkey was to play a role as mediator in the Hamas talks. That is now impossible.
Where is President Obama? He could stop this.
