Scotland Yard is pleading with hundreds of retired detectives to come back to work. The reasons given are to cope with the terror attacks and also the Grenfell Tower disaster.

The force has sent a letter to hundreds of retired detectives in a desperate bid to solve an apparent staffing crisis.

In the letter, deputy commissioner Craig Mackey, notes that recent incidents have required a “significant policing response” and that certain skills were in “high demand”, the telegraph reported.

He acknowledged in the letter that that they are facing “challenging times” and that it is a “significant ask” of former employees who have long since left the force.

We think they should close their borders.
