US Backs Al Qaeda in Syria

President Obama, always one to lead from behind, is once again late to the party. Now that the ranks of the rebels are filled with al Qaeda terrorists, President Obama  is planning to send arms to Syria within a month. The CIA has been shipping weapons to a secret warehouse in Jordan. The arms will then be sent to selected groups in the Free Syrian Army.

“Al-Nusra has added thousands of fighters in the past year. We are going to have to outpace that,” a counter-terrorism official said. That will be a quite a  problem.

Some rebel forces in the Free Syrian Army have been caught on tape beheading civilians and eating body parts.

According to the examiner, rebels in the Free Syrian Army, attacked the mostly Christian al-Duvair village in Reef outside of Homs. They allegedly massacred women and children during the spree before Assad’s Syrian army stopped the slaughter.

The reporters were pro-Assad but it is certainly more than possible. According to German intelligence, 95 percent of the rebels aren’t even Syrian. Foreign fighters means al Qaeda fighters.

The Free Syrian Army has been openly supportive of al Qaeda.

The NY Times reported that evidence from “flight-control data and interviews with militia members, smugglers, rebels, analysts and officials in several countries, offers a profile of a complex and active multinational effort, financed largely by Qatar, to transport arms from Libya to Syria’s opposition fighters. Libya’s own former fighters, who sympathize with Syria’s rebels, have been eager collaborators.”

Qatar sponsors terrorism.

In mid-June, the NY Times reported that dozens of Shia Muslims were massacred in Hatlah by rebel forces who attempted to place the blame on Assad forces. Video easily obtained online shows rebels burning homes and shouting epithets.

Dialogue from the video according to the NY Times:

“This is your end, you dogs,” a man off camera said as he panned across what he said were the corpses of “pug nosed” Shiites, including one with what appeared to be a gunshot wound to the head.

“We have raised the banner of ‘There Is No God but God’ over the houses of the rejectionist Shiite apostates,” one fighter chanted in another clip as a black cloud billowed above the village and jubilant gunmen brandished black flags often used by the extremist Al Nusra Front and other Islamist fighting groups.

The US and the Western allies believe they can keep the arms they send limited to select rebel groups but that is unlikely.

The weapons will most certainly flow to extremist factions which will include al Qaeda. Look to the recent history, Libya being the most recent example. Qaddafi’s extensive arsenal of weaponry disappeared and many of the weapons turned up in al Qaeda’s hands.

According to the NY Times, “the Supreme Military Council generally does not distribute weapons to blacklisted or extremist groups, Syrian activists said, but these groups have little trouble acquiring the weapons once the arms enter Syria, often buying them directly from groups that receive the council’s support.”

The telegraph reported in April that the jihadist terrorists – al Qaeda in Iraq – announced their merger with Syria’s rebel force Jabhat al-Nusra. They are among the most effective fighters and the rebel forces are relying on them more-and-more. These terrorists are the same people who fought our soldiers in Iraq. The merged group is taking over the rebel forces according to many reports.
