What They’d Have Us Believe About Petraeus’ Resignation – Update

THE OTHER WOMAN

Expect more updates as the craziness continues and especially expect more updates if General Petraeus testifies.  If Petraeus’ testimony detracts from the White House story, he will have first been successfully demonized. Another coincidence! Something crazy is going on here.

Only in the Obama administration could this happen. Remember the ads for President Obama which said there was not one scandal surrounding him? There are endless scandals. This is just one more.

Where are all the adults? If this is true of our top CIA official and a four-star general, what does that say about us? I want my country back.

It is interesting that the New York Times had all the dirt on Petraeus hours after his announcement. At the same time, President Obama was praising him and expressing his regret over the resignation.

The left-wing thinks that any mention of the many oddities is the stuff of right-wing nut case conspiracy theorists. I, on the other hand, think it odd to not be curious about all these coincidences.

The left-wing is going with every bit of gossip they can find and they are making it worse wherever they can. I find that concerning as well.

KT McFarland and Michael Scheuer:

Update: 14:00 hours: If you want the story straight from the White House,  you only have to read The New York Times:

The F.B.I. investigation that led to the resignation of David H. Petraeus as C.I.A. director on Friday began with a complaint several months ago about “harassing” e-mails sent by Paula Broadwell, Mr. Petraeus’s biographer, to an unidentified third person, a government official briefed on the case said on Saturday.

When F.B.I. agents following up on the complaint began to examine Ms. Broadwell’s e-mails, they discovered exchanges between her and Mr. Petraeus that revealed that they were having an affair, said the official, who spoke of the investigation on the condition of anonymity.

Update to the Update: 13:15 hours:  Ronald Kessler, the journalist who broke the Secret Service prostitution scandal, reported Friday that the FBI had been investigating Petraeus since late spring. The FBI pored over his emails from July 2010 to July 2011. The FBI began to intercept the emails since he was married. They contained explicit sexual references.

The woman broke up with him sometime after September 6, 2011 but he continued to pursue her, sending her thousands of emails over several months. [Updated: 11/13/12: If true, he's like a crazed teenager. I tend to think it is not true because they are accusing General Allen of the same thing. How many obsessive-compulsives can there be.]

The interception allegedly began when the FBI mistakenly believed one of the email contained a reference to corruption according to Newsweek. The Associated Press said that the FBI uncovered the affair when they began an investigation into her knowledge of the former general’s email correspondence.

The New York Observer found this deleted piece from her website:

“He came to Harvard University where I was a graduate student and wanted to speak with students about the merits of [the] counter-insurgency approach to fighting the Iraq War, which we were losing at the time….I went up to him and said I’m writing my thesis on negotiating with terrorists and I think it could help your team win and you should really read it and he was kind of enough to indulge me and take the paper and give me his business card. We kept in touch via email for a couple years, and I was still a graduate student. Two years later, I reached out to him if he would speak to students at Harvard…He agreed to do a video teleconference from Baghdad. I asked him if I could use him as a case study in my doctoral dissertation, and he agreed.”

The New York Observer also quoted her as writing she was embedded with the general for almost a year.

Update: 13:00 hours: The WSJ reported today that a “person familiar with the investigation [whatever that means] said the computer investigation began late this spring. Mr. Petraeus was interviewed by the FBI recently. While Mr. Petraeus was still a general, he had email exchanges with the woman, but there wasn’t a physical relationship, the person said. The affair began after Mr. Petraeus retired from the Army in August 2011 and ended months ago.

It is important to note that while Petraeus went along with the video story in the beginning, he did not go along with the claim it was not al-Qaida. He also said that the CIA never refused to send help to the consulate, sending the message that it was the White House that refused.

Original Story: 11/10/2012: General Petraeus was a brilliant and gallant general. He fought two wars and won, wars which Obama lost in the “peace process.” Petraeus surpassed General MacArthur in skill.  He will and should go down as one of our greatest generals.

Being a great general does not mean you can’t be a flawed human being. It also doesn’t mean we have to ignore the obvious.

General Petraeus had an affair with his biographer, Paula Broadwell, while they were embedded in Afghanistan writing her years-long biography of the general. Petraeus is also her dissertation advisor. They met in 2006 when he spoke to her graduate class. He began mentoring her at that time.

I’ll leave the extra-marital issue to his wife and children.

The biography, All In: The Education of General David Petraeus., was released in January of this year. The book was completed last year when it went to editing.

In order for General Petraeus to become the CIA Chief, he was required to be investigated by the FBI and he would have taken a lie detecter test. That was 14 months ago. They had to have known about the affair at that time and they knew Mrs. Broadwell could have had the opportunity to look at his emails given the circumstances. Hell, maybe he showed them to her.

KT McFarland said that she knew General Petraeus very well and the affair was a poorly-kept secret.

All of a sudden this affair is so important that General Petraeus had to resign, on a Friday dump day, immediately after the election, and 5 days before his testimony on Benghazi. What a coincidence!

Also coincidentally, General Petraeus gave an interview during the Afghan war stating that the draw-down was too much too soon. President Obama was none-too-happy at the time. President Obama told us to vote for revenge and Valerie Jarrett said they would seek revenge once he started his second term. Under these circumstances, I do not believe Obama would have the same loyalty to Petraeus that he has to Rice or Clinton or Panetta, who are loyal Democrats.

General Petraeus said the timing was his. You can choose to believe him.

General Petraeus’ CIA have been the scapegoats in the Benghazi affair since the beginning and, coincidentally of course, the administration had this information to blackmail him with.

General Petraeus and Leon Panetta were the only top-level officials who did not try to say al-Qaida was not responsible for the attacks and neither took responsibility for not sending help to the consulate and annex in Benghazi.

The general suddenly had pains of conscience as he was about to testify, which he said he looked forward to.

Well, the general still can testify. Let’s see if he does. Perhaps he wanted to get this out of the way so he can testify truthfully. I hope that is the case.
