A woman in Georgia came out of a store to find her car window smashed. An Iraq war veteran who suffers from PTSD readily admitted he did it to save her dog in her hot car.
The woman who was irate then insisted he be arrested though police said they didn’t want to do it. There is no law, however, to cover a man saving a dog’s life. A child’s life can be saved but not an animal’s. Animal rights groups are working on that.
“We didn’t want to charge him, but he told us he broke the windows and when you have a victim there saying she wants him charged, we had no other choice,” said Chief Weems.
Michael Hammons couldn’t stand by while the Yorkshire terrier was in distress.
“I’ve got PTSD, and I’ve seen enough death and destruction,” Hammons told 11Alive, noting his service in Desert Storm. “And I didn’t want anything else to happen if I could prevent it.”
Onlookers were waiting for police as the dog panted heavily. He grabbed the foot rest off his wife’s wheelchair and busted the window.
His wife said he has to save lives because he couldn’t save all the lives over in Iraq.
