You Won’t Believe What Common Core Testing Looks Like on Long Island

You won’t believe what Common Core and the National Standardized testing is doing to Long Island students and teachers.

One school district in Suffolk County, Long Island had a parent-teacher conference in which every teacher said the same thing. ‘We are no longer teachers, we are your child’s guides.’

Under the new regulations, they said, they cannot be referred to as teachers any longer, they are only the child’s guide. The child is no longer an individual either, only part of a team, they explained.

Collectivism at its best!

The history teacher closed the door after making his speech and said I want you to know I am your kid’s teacher.

Currently, one test given at the beginning and end of the year, the SLO, determines how teachers are rated by the State. Teachers are being graded on a scale of 1 to 10.  In yet another local school, a teacher, who is by all accounts a fine teacher and who is given some of the more challenging students because of his talents, received a score of 1, 1 being very bad. He’s devastated. He also doesn’t know how the State arrived at this number. No one does. There is also no way to appeal it.

Teacher assessments might also include the National Standardized test results but that is unclear at the moment. I will get back to you on that.

Children are being devastated as well. One mother in Nassau County whom I know, said that her son is tested every day and is conveniently ill before school each day. She said he used to love school but now he doesn’t want to go.

Another friend’s daughter in 4th grade in yet another school district in Suffolk County has a learning disability. She hasn’t yet learned division with two numbers. Nonetheless, she was sent home with the following homework.

Keep in mind that this 9-year old has never learned division by two numbers, she is learning disabled, and has not been taught the rote basics.

Parents in a number of schools are being told that children should learn word problems first. If they don’t get the answer right, it’s not a problem as long as they understand the process. [Just like the real world, right?]

Check out Grade 1 ELA, from Engage NY (what an ironic name for the State Ed. Dept. to pick). Keep in mind that first graders often don’t understand what town they live in and how their town relates to the rest of the world.

Grade 1 ELA includes “…learning Early World Civilizations.” It would be nice if the five and six year olds learned about US towns, cities, and states first but we are globalists now after all.

Here are some of the concepts the children are supposed to get from their picture books:

  1. Locate the area known as Mesopotamia on a world map or globe and identify it as part of Asia;
  2. Explain the importance of the Tigris and Euphrates Rivers and the use of canals to support farming and the development of the city of Babylon;
  3. Describe the city of Babylon and the Hanging Gardens;
  4. Identify cuneiform as the system of writing used in Mesopotamia;
  5. Explain why a written language is important to the development of a civilization;
  6. Explain the significance of the Code of Hammurabi;
  7. Explain why rules and laws are important to the development of a civilization;

There’s more but you get the idea.

I know you don’t believe me so click the link and read if for yourself. If you do read the material on the Engage NY site, you will find that it’s all about the tests. The children will live and breathe the assessments – the data driven assessments.

The Core and the testing have been written by eggheads who don’t have a clue about child development or who don’t believe in using the research gathered over the last 100 years – they’ve discarded that.

One local district plans to back out of PARCC, the experimental program. It’s a start!

Please keep in mind that Long Island has some of the finest K-12 schools in the nation. Every district has a lot of money poured into it and our students always rank in the top tiers on all testing. Our children win more than the usual share of science scholarships and we have large numbers of students getting into Ivy Leagues.

According to Breitbart, the House has just passed a measure titled the Student Success Act (SSA) which would eliminate the federal mandate known as Adequate Yearly Progress for reading and math proficiency, allowing states to design their own accountability systems. It would also eliminate the Highly Qualified Teacher (HQT) federal mandate, which is both burdensome and ineffective. It returns the decision to state and local educational leaders.

The SSA includes strong language clearly delineating that standards and assessments are not to be dictated by the U.S. Secretary of Education, who happens to be Arne Duncan who did quite a job as head of the Chicago School System.

Georgia, Alabama, Utah, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania are withdrawing from the National Standardized tests. Hopefully, that will weaken the collectivist educational nightmare.

The National Standardized tests nationalize education and take control out of local hands. That is clearly not allowed under our Constitution.

The testing has got to go for starters and probably the entire curriculum has got to go too
