While we’re going broke, AmeriCorps will triple in size by 2017 according to the mandates of Obama’s National Service Bill of 2009. The bill is essentially paid “volunteerism” and ACORN (or whatever they call themselves these days) and its affiliates are eligible while all religious organizations are ineligible.
Then there is Obama’s Serve America Act of 2009 which includes start up youth engagement zones, which partners with colleges to provide student help for low income communities and it establishes a campus service program, which provides grants to states and nonprofit organizations to fund national service in low-income communities, and so on.
All of this “volunteer” service is paid for by taxpayers. The secondary schools are required to add instruction on this to their already overburdened curricula.
The budget for National Service, which includes AmeriCorps is stunning, with the program receiving over $1 billion last year. The breakdown shows that RSVP received $50.4 million, AmeriCorps was funded at $350 million, and Learn and Serve America came in a $39.5 million.
President Obama, former community organizer, said about these programs, “We need your service, right now, in this moment in history. … I’m asking you to stand up and play your part. I’m asking you to help change history’s course.” He forgot to add that if they didn’t, he’d force them to do so, at least that is what I think the nationalization of school loans will bring about.
These programs partner with colleges and, now that college loans are moving towards nationalization, the loans, which include Pell grants, will likely be tied to “mandatory volunteerism.” To get or keep the loan or grant, students will likely have to fulfill “volunteer” requirements.
It’s a way of indoctrinating youth to the government’s view of what is important and it warps the meaning of “volunteerism” and charity. The recipients are specifically chosen by the government and according to what the government thinks is important.
Remember when Obama said, “We cannot continue to rely on our military in order to achieve the national security objectives we’ve set. We’ve got to have a civilian national security force that is just as powerful, just as strong, just as well funded.” I think that means this will be mandatory and it will be according to his ideology. This is what he means by strengthening national security.
