The White House confirmed that President Obama is preparing a series of executive actions on gun control. He never lets a crisis go to waste.
“It’s a high priority and will continue to be until we start to see more progress on this issue in this town,” White House Press Secretary Josh Earnest told reporters today at the press briefing.
Referring to White House attorneys, he said, “I can tell you that they’re not stumped, they’re continuing to review the law that’s on the books and continuing to consult with legal authorities but also others who may have ideas about what steps that can be taken to keep guns out of the hands of criminals,” Earnest said.
Earnest didn’t give details about the new executive orders but they will be something along the lines of past proposals.
Here are seven possibilities.
1. BACKGROUND CHECKS
He might toughen up nationwide background checks and lengthen the time one has to wait for a check to be completed which does nothing to ensure a better result. That’s the easiest to implement and there is a lot of support for it.
2. PRIVATE SALES AND GUN SHOWS
He has often talked about making all private sales for all guns go through background checks, whether they be inherited or in the family and whether they be handguns or rifles. The so-called gun show loophole will be on the table.
3. GOVERNMENT RESEARCH
He might step up the biased government research he began with the last series of executive orders.
4. REPORTING BY HEALTHCARE PROFESSIONALS
One of his goals is to have doctors and other healthcare professionals freely report people who are gun owners and about whom they have concerns. He wrote in his January 16, 2013 document, Now is the Time, that “We should never ask doctors and other healthcare providers to turn a blind eye to the risks posed by guns in the wrong hands.”
5. PUSHING STATES
He might do more to push states to report people with any mental issues to the federal government.
6.WIDENING THE REACH
That could possibly include reporting more people in government databases with any issue such as veterans getting assistance for problems like PTSD or brain injury, seniors who have some mental deficiency, people who are on drugs for anxiety, depression and so on.
He says his goal is to make sure dangerous people don’t have guns. In order to do that, he has to include many people who are not dangerous at all and leave them without the right to arms and self-defense.
He has referred to creating legislation/regulations to target possible populations of dangerous or “untrustworthy individuals”, whatever that means. He doesn’t want anyone to slip through the cracks, which is impossible.
The government studies show that the goal is to have fewer gun owners so expect something that does that.
7. GUN INSURANCE
One of the more horrendous suggestions, which has come from the likes of Rep. Carolyn Maloney of New yYork, is to require gun owners to carry insurance if they own a gun.
Other suggestions to put serial numbers on guns and ammo are probably not in the cards this time around but he could tighten demands on gun manufacturers, dealers or sellers, making the paperwork and costs more restrictive.
Another suggestion has been to ration and limit gun sales but that has been ruled unconstitutional.
As he is doing this, his criminal justice system is planning the release of up to roughly 46,000 of 100,000 criminals in Federal prisons for drug crimes according to Tuesday’s Washington Post. Some of the criminals are undoubtedly over-charged and should be released, but many will be dangerous drug dealers who use guns.
These are people put away by DA’s and juries but Obama is circumventing them as he circumvents every pillar of our justice system.
Perhaps the administration won’t go too far with the gun laws disguised as executive orders and we will be pleasantly surprised, but it seems fairly obvious that before his term is over he wants the US to be a country with a significantly watered-down Second Amendment. The only question is how far will he go at this moment in time.
