All HHS workers given $25,000 voluntary buyout offer

A source familiar with the situation told CBS News that all employees in the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services were notified Friday of the option to voluntarily resign in exchange for a $25,000 payment.

The department-wide email offered a “voluntary separation incentive payment,” the source said. Employees have until March 14 to reply.

Friday’s offer is part of the Trump administration’s efforts to slash the size of federal workforce and shrink the government’s budget through mass layoffs and financial cuts.

Federal agencies announced over 62,200 job cuts in February, surging U.S. layoffs to their highest mark since July 2020.

Last week, the Social Security Administration offered a similar buyout of $15,000 to $25,000 to its employees.

I remember when one of my employers went bankrupt. None of us got a buyout offer nor severance, we just lost our jobs and no government employee shed any tears for us.

There should be a formula for differing amounts, not a flat amount…like maybe the feds full retirement formula of when age plus time in service equals 85. But people with 80 points need to be offered 5 points and let them just retire early and people with 75 points and up need to be offered an early retirement with reduced benefits.
For the rest, it could be a formula like when age+service= number of points, such as….
60 to 74 points, $25,000. (Like 50 years old and 10 years service or 45 years old and 15 years of service, or 60 and 14 years, etc.)…similarly,
50 to 59 points, $22,500
40 to 49 points, $20,000
30 to 39 points, $17,500
below 30, $15,000.
