Another Ex-Congressman from Chicago Arrested, This Time in Zimbabwe – Update

Melvyn Reynolds

Update: Bill Clinton commuted the sentence of this child predator in 2001!

Former congressman Melvyn Reynolds was arrested by immigration officials in Zimbabwe for allegedly possessing pornographic material and violating immigration laws. He also accumulated hotel bills worth $24,500 which he hasn’t paid.

Melvyn Reynolds was arrested in 1994 for sexual assault and abuse of a 16-year old campaign volunteer but it didn’t keep him from getting re-elected three months later. He claimed the charges were racially motivated, however, he was convicted on twelve counts of sexual assault, obstruction of justice, and solicitation of child pornography in 1995 and was forced to resign.

He was sentenced to five years in prison. In 1997, he was convicted of 15 unrelated counts of bank fraud and lying to the SEC investigators. He received another 78 months in the federal penitentiary.

After his release, in January, 2001, Jesse Jackson hired him to help him fight the increasing numbers of black youths going to jail.

In 2004 Reynolds ran against and lost to the now-disgraced Jesse Jackson Jr. who is serving out his prison term for corruption. Reynolds aspired to Jackson’s seat in 2012.

Reynolds still has aspirations of running for office, hopefully this will put an end to it.
