Trier, the German hometown of Karl Marx has voted to accept a controversial statue of the communist revolutionary from China. Not everyone is happy about it.
There was debate but the end result was the erecting of a 21 foot bronze statue of Karl Marx and the honoring of communist China, the telegraph reported.
China offered it to commemorate the communist’s 200th anniversary.
The bronze monument was designed by the artist Wu Weishan.
Trier now honors the man who developed communism which led to as many as 100 million deaths. They also honored the human rights abusers – China.
The Trier mayor Wolfram Leibe said: “This has nothing to do with glorification. Those times are over.”
Spoken like a liberal!
The head of Trier’s town planning department Andreas Ludwig also said he saw the statue as a honour, telling German broadcaster Südwestrundfunk: “That the largest country on Earth has thought about the small town of Trier is great. 150,000 Chinese tourists come every year to Trier – and that could rise even more.”
How great is it to be remembered for the man who never bathed or worked and set off a revolution that ended in violence and death. Taking a statue from communists who abuse their own people sounds like something that would be better forgotten.
