The famed Hollywood sign was altered overnight on New Year’s eve to read Hollyweed, L.A. Police Officer Christopher Garcia told CNN. The prankster hung tarps to turn the ‘Os’ into ‘Es’. He was caught on camera, at least they think it’s a ‘he’, but it was too dark and rainy to even figure out the person’s race or height.
That’s good. We’re all rooting for the prankster.
The incident comes after California voters approved recreational marijuana. California businesses, however, aren’t licensed to sell recreational marijuana until Jan. 1, 2018.

As an irrelevant aside, and more important than the sign or passing laws on pot, the state residents should worry about their economy that is starting to resemble a third world country. California should declare themselves a separate country and get off the federal dole. Yay, Calexit!
Californians see the sign as a celebration of the new law. Twitter is abuzz with Californians thrilled about the vandalism and the law.
The Hollyweed sign was still up at noon because it’s a holiday and park rangers are backed up, but the mayor wanted immediate action.
“It needs to be taken down and that will be done momentarily,” said Estevan Montemayor, a spokesman for LA City Councilman David Ryu. “”We don’t know who did it but park rangers are going up there very soon to take down the draping that was put on top of the ‘O’ to alter the sign.”
It was changed back by 1:45p.m. EST.
Maybe they should have left it, it’s an appropriate sign.
The sign has sensors to alert police but vandals can avoid them the way they are spaced out.
The Hollywood Sign Has Been Hollyweed Before
The prankster isn’t all that creative. The first time the sign was altered to read ‘Hollyweed’ was in 1976.
This photo shows how the sign looked when pranksters did it in 1983.
