President Donald Trump allegedly told two top Russian officials last week that firing “nut job” FBI Director James Comey eased “great pressure” on him, The New York Times reported Friday.
“I just fired the head of the FBI. He was crazy, a real nut job,” Trump said, according to the Times.
“I faced great pressure because of Russia. That’s taken off.”
This comes from a summary by people not present at the meeting. Mr. Trump added, “I’m not under investigation.”
From the NY Times: The White House document that contained Mr. Trump’s comments was based on notes taken from inside the Oval Office and has been circulated as the official account of the meeting. One official read quotations to The Times, and a second official confirmed the broad outlines of the discussion.
Sean Spicer, the White House press secretary, did not dispute the account.
In a statement, he said that Mr. Comey had put unnecessary pressure on the president’s ability to conduct diplomacy with Russia on matters such as Syria, Ukraine and the Islamic State.
By grandstanding and politicizing the investigation into Russia’s actions, James Comey created unnecessary pressure on our ability to engage and negotiate with Russia,” Mr. Spicer said. “The investigation would have always continued, and obviously, the termination of Comey would not have ended it. Once again, the real story is that our national security has been undermined by the leaking of private and highly classified conversations.”
A third government official who had been briefed said Mr. Trump was using a negotiating tactic. He wanted concessions on Syria from Lavrov.
The NY Times suggested Trump was lying and a special counsel won’t ensure that the investigation will be free of political interference.
Democrats and NeverTrumpers are alarmed because they now are going to say the special counsel won’t be able to do his job.
Every day, this crew of Trump haters will put forth a scandal. Someone needs to give Sean Spicer a Purple Heart.
The Sentinel believes Comey is a nut job and Trump was just being Trump though it’s naive of him to think the pressure would end. Both left and right are out to get him. What do you think?
This is what Spengler thinks:
In other news, AOL reported that a close advisor to Trump has emerged as a person of interest in the Russia probe. That’s all the information available.
