Vivek Murthy, a hack political operative and anti-gun physician, was appointed Surgeon General this afternoon. Republicans are blaming it on Sen. Ted Cruz and Democrats are crediting Cruz with it, because Cruz put up a resolution beginning debate on a point of order against Obama’s immigration executive order. The claim is that it gave Reid the opportunity to call a special session and put two dozen stalled Obama nominees on the agenda for confirmation before the Senate recessed.
The fact is that Reid would have kept them in session anyway, but the real bad news is that the Surgeon General’s office is now politicized and will become an anti-Second Amendment propaganda machine.
Murthy is a disaster for the Second Amendment and will further the Obama anti-gun agenda with the power of the government’s health research arm and a very loud megaphone.
Vivek Murthy, an ally of Barack Obama, is a community organizer of doctors. He is a Boston physician whose only significant achievement is his organizing of Doctors for America, a group that says they are nonpartisan but has openly advocated for Obama. The group started out as Doctors for Obama.
His group successfully fought a proposed Florida law that would have prevented doctors from including in a person’s medical file whether they are a gun owner.
Mr. Obama has politicized every agency of government and now the Surgeon General’s office will be as well.
Under the banner of Doctors for America, Murthy has referred to guns as a public health threat, and circulated a petition to pressure Congress to pass stricter gun laws. Murthy will undoubtedly push for all doctors to do the same.
His Doctors for America (DFA) has exhibited its extreme agenda, pushing Congress to ban “assault” weapons and “high-capacity” magazines, and to spend more tax dollars for more research proving that fewer guns would lower the crime rate.
Doctors for America, is the Obama-linked sister group to other progressive groups, such as Organizing for America and the Center for American Progress, whose founder, John Podesta, is a senior adviser on the White House staff. Podesta has sworn to put through Obama’s agenda without Congress.
Murthy and his assistant Rachel Curley are fellows at CAP, a think tank supported by George Soros.
How do you think gun research will go under Murthy?
You can be sure that he will initiate studies that prove the neighborhood doctor is the one to control your gun rights and that guns are a danger to all our health.
His group submitted a plan to cut gun-related deaths in half by 2020. The plan includes the usual litany of time-worn gun control prescriptions with some extreme elements added in for good measure:
- A federal ban on the sale of assault weapons and ammunition
- Buyback programs
- Strengthening “regulations for guns used for hunting, sport, and self-protection”
- Universal background checks and licenses for anyone purchasing guns and ammunition
- Mandatory firearm safety training and testing
- Regulation of private sales and transfers of guns and ammunition
- Mandatory waiting periods of at least 48 hours
- Limits on the purchase of ammunition
- Better policing of neighborhoods with a high concentration of gun violence
- Prohibit laws preventing physicians from discussing gun safety with patients.
- Remove the provision in the Affordable Care Act and other federal policies that prohibit physicians from documenting gun ownership.
- Invest in improving access to mental health resources.
- Reinstating CDC and NIH funding for firearms injury and death prevention research.
- Removing restrictions in the Affordable Care Act and other legislation that prohibits databases and data collection on gun violence programs.
- Ensuring that newly implemented programs are studied carefully to assess impact.
He’s only 36-years old with little experience.
Richard Carmona, a former Surgeon General under George Bush warned against appointing someone to this position who does not have the proper background.
In a letter to Obama, Carmona said that a nominee without significant public health experience or a background in the career uniformed services risks “a distinctive disadvantage in credibility, knowledge and depth and breadth of experience when attempting to address complex public health issues,” according to Politico.
He has no experience running anything, not even a small department. However it’s not about running the office of Surgeon General comfortably, it’s about pushing a far-left agenda.
A sample of Murthy’s tweets:
Vivek Murthy @vivek_murthy Apr 21: Signs of progress-we got 20 votes in the senate in favor of gun violence legislation that we wouldn’t have had 1 year ago. Have faith #dr4a
Vivek Murthy @vivek_murthy Apr 21: Docs fired up to keep fighting for gun safety laws @Drsforamerica natl conference with @haroldpollack Brina Milikowsky, Eric Fleegler #dr4a
Vivek Murthy @vivek_murthy 21 Dec 2012: NRA press conference disappointing but predictable – blame everything in the world except guns for the Newtown tragedy. #wakeup
And there is this one:
Then there is this tweet: “Tired of politicians playing politics [with] guns, putting lives at risk [because] they’re scared of NRA. Guns are a health care issue.”
Murthy advocates for whatever barriers he can put between citizens and their right to keep and bear arms.
The National Rifle Association is concerned that Murthy will use his position as surgeon general as a “bully pulpit” to control the narrative and treat gun-control as a public health issue, advocating to undermine our Second Amendment rights.
CNN is already at it this afternoon ripping into the NRA and extolling the experience and virtues of Vivek Murthy.
