House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.) got a standing ovation in a Wednesday House GOP conference meeting after he addressed secret recordings of his comments in the aftermath of Jan. 6, according to members and sources in the room.
It looks like the members will support him for the speakership.
McCarthy told members that the damning quotes from the Jan. 10, 2021, leadership call, during which he said he would suggest former President Trump resign if impeached and wondered if GOP members could be kicked off social media, were simply the leaders speculating on different scenarios.
In other words, they were just talking out loud.
“He just said that we were going to lay out different things of what could be,” said Rep. Robert Aderholt (Ala.). “At this point, you know, I take his word for it.”
IT’S A DISTRACTION
The issue centers around a new book by two New York Times reporters that includes sections embarrassing to Kevin McCarthy. The Times released taped conversations of McCarthy’s discussions with leadership that included Liz Cheney. Cheney claimed she didn’t release the tapes but she is a prime suspect. In tapes played last night on CNN and MSNBC, McCarthy can be heard slamming conservative members of congress four days after the J6 riot/rally. In fairness, people weren’t sure what exactly went on at that point.
Even the conference’s most conservative members said that their constituents are more concerned about high food and gas prices rather than what McCarthy said, and saw news of McCarthy’s comments as an attempt to divide the conference.
Several members added that they had not listened to the tapes.
“This is a distraction, folks. Come on. This is simply a distraction by the left trying to drive a wedge in a very unified Republican Party and a very unified conference,” said Rep. Barry Loudermilk (Ga.).
They don’t trust anything the press says.
Donald Trump also still supports Kevin McCarthy.

I do not assume this story is true. The only sources I have seen here or elsewhere are AP, CNN, WP and NYT, all supportive of the RINO betrayal of the GOP. I doubt OAN was allowed in the meeting.
It is normal for some people to clap after a leader speech.
I think this NYT story is about hurting the GOP in November. The bait was laid with the tapes, then they followed up with this story.
McCarthy is an absolute SNAKE. My gut never betrays me and, it had sounded loudly every time I’ve seen McCarthy for YEARS.
As for that standing O, would love to see video who actually stood
Folks, it is not good enough to vote Republican. We must, MUST have genuine e MAGA Republicans. We are currently in a horrible state of affairs because WE have been fighting against The Party of Treason for DECADES with an army of Benedict Arnolds.
That phone call McCarthy DENIED, was a drop in the bucket to what followed. Apparently, McCarthy wants to know why MAGA Republicans in congress Can not ALSO be kicked off of Twitter.
McCarthy can NOT BE MADE SPEAKER. Ñor Scalise who, like McCarthy, behaves more like a Dem regardless of what he espouses. We must, MUST demand every new GOP candidate for congress sign a written statement they will NOT vote for McCarthy.
I suggest either Jim Jordan or Matt Gaetz
“In other words, they were just talking out loud.”
Old saying, “Where there’s smoke there’s fire.”
“This is a distraction, folks. Come on. This is simply a distraction by the left trying to drive a wedge in a very unified Republican Party and a very unified conference,” said Rep. Barry Loudermilk (Ga.).
Unified as what? Democrat light? I don’t trust the establishment and especially Paul Ryan’s hand picked lackey, Kevin McCarthy. And talk about driving a wedge, I’m wondering about the accusations against Rep. Cawthorn. I’m not saying they’re not true but neither am I believing they are true. Democrats hate him and I’ll bet Paul Ryan’s hand picked boy hates him also so at this time I’ll believe Rep. Cawthorn and hold any negative opinion of him in neutral until proof of the accusations are true. The Republican establishment is also going after Rep. Marjorie Taylor Green and every other true conservative in Congress.
