Obama Likes His Security Leaks Not Reporters’ Leaks

  • The administration leaked information unfavorable to Netanyahu when Netanyahu was being demonized by the administration
  • The Stuxnet virus leak endangered Israel and the US
  • Leaks to film producers about SEAL Team Six endangered the members of the team
  • Obama’s “kill-list” leak was employed to make Obama look tough
  • The White House leaked information about Israel’s secret air bases

President Obama has been pursuing the allegedly serious leaks by the AP and James Rosen though we now know they were not leaks of any merit. Obama does not pursue leaks when they are leaks that shine a favorable light on him, however.

In September 2011, when President Obama was taking heat from the public for his treatment of Netanyahu, information leaked out that Secretary Gates thought Netanyahu was “ungrateful” and that Hillary Clinton shared Obama’s displeasure with Netanyahu having seen it first hand when her husband was President. These leaks served Obama well while he was in the throes of demonizing Netanyahu.

In June 2012, leaks appeared in a book by David Sanger, Confront and Conceal. His articles based on his book appeared in Newsweek and the NY Times.

They showed an unprecedented level of access to top level security that could only be obtained from the White House. There are quotes that only could have been obtained by Obama’s closest aides. No one has denied the truth of Sanger’s articles or any of the details in the book.

The leaks involved the Stuxnet worm used against Iran. They painted a picture of a president who is strong on foreign affairs and creative in fighting his opponents without the use of military force.

Sanger himself said that the government okayed his Stuxnet article in the NY Times, in which Sanger revealed that the U.S. and Israel worked together on computer viruses (like Stuxnet) and worms aimed at setting back the Iranian nuclear program. [Politico]

Stuxnet was a serious security leak because it endangered the United States and Israel. Israel and the US had denied being party to these computer attacks and it turns out we orchestrated them.

From the  NY Times Stuxnet article –

…Over the last few years, Iran has become the target of a series of notable cyberattacks, some of which were linked to its nuclear program. The best known of these was Stuxnet, the name given to a computer worm, or malicious computer program.

According to an article in The New York Times (posted June 2012), during President Obama‘s first few months in office, he secretly ordered increasingly sophisticated attacks on Iran’s computer systems at its nuclear enrichment facilities, significantly expanding America’s first sustained use of cyberweapons.

Mr. Obama decided to accelerate the attacks — begun in the Bush administration and code-named Olympic Games — even after an element of the program accidentally became public in the summer of 2010 because of a programming error that allowed it to escape Iran’s Natanz plant and sent it around the world on the Internet. Computer security experts who began studying the worm, which had been developed by the United States and Israel, gave it a name: Stuxnet…

We revealed – leaked – that Israelis tested this worm that was considered crucial in delaying Iran’s nuclear program.

High security leaks were blatant after the Osama bin Laden raid. Obama’s entire 2012 campaign focused on birth control and the killing of Osama bin Laden.

A movie, Zero Dark Thirty, originally promised to make Obama look good prior to the election. There was even a segment, eventually edited-out, that falsely portrayed Romney as refusing to go after Osama. The movie was not released until after the election in the end because of the negative publicity.

Documents released under freedom of information laws showed the Pentagon and CIA divulged secret information about the commando unit, known as Seal Team Six to the producers of the film Zero Dark Thirty. The filmakers were allegedly taken to a classified facility and toured CIA vaults.

Since Gates left the Obama administration, he has been vocal about his displeasure concerning the security leaks about the raid. They endanger the SEAL Team Six members.

Our own Vice President Joe Biden leaked that it was SEAL Team Six who killed Osama bin Laden.

Sanger’s book claims that Gates, while still on the job, went to see Donilon, Obama’s current national security advisor, and his team by Wednesday of that week and said, ‘I have a new strategic communications approach to recommend.’ When Donilon asked him what it was, Gates replied, “Shut the f… up.” [Weekly Standard]

Donilon is a secretive character. No one knows where he was and what he was doing the night of the Benghazi attacks.

The NY Times article about the President’s “kill-list” has the president personally directing drone attacks in Pakistan and Yemen. The information, according to the paper came from “three dozen” of the president’s “current and former advisers.”

The article has Obama poring over biographies of people to be killed “on what one official calls the macabre “baseball cards” of an unconventional war.” The article continues by referring to the fact that collateral damage is no longer part of the equation. Then there is the reference by one aide about concerns over it becoming “Whac-a-Mole. [NY Times]

The message from the article is that Obama is tough and courageous, assuming all the responsibility.

Obama appointed two special prosecutors instead of an independent prosecutor, leaving the investigation in the hands of the Executive which is likely the branch leaking the information. That is no different than Eric Holder investigating himself in the IRS scandal.

In April 2012, the Obama administration leaked information that Israel had an agreement to fly out of secret air bases in Azerbaijan which could only be interpreted as a move to delay or prevent Israel from striking Iran’s nuclear facilities. Read about it here – Obama’s betrayal of Israel.

If the White House did not leak the information, why didn’t Obama pursue these leaks as enthusiastically as he and Holder pursued James Rosen and the AP?

Eric Holder held his secret meeting with some in the media today. General disclosures from that meeting indicate that Holder is willing to change the rules as they apply to reporter’s leaks. That of course is a diversion.

Holder also said in the meeting that he never had any intention of prosecuting Rosen which means he is still a liar because the warrant he signed stated that he believed Rosen was a criminal co-conspirator under the Espionage Act. Holder’s purpose in lying was probably to spy on Rosen and Fox News.
